‘You have to get over the me thing’: Kevin Bacon on money, marriage – and learning to live with himself

Kevin Bacon, Hollywood’s great survivor, first set hearts fluttering in the 1984 classic Footloose. Now 65, he’s back on the big screen again. Here, he talks about his band, politics, family, embracing change and, most of all, learning selflessness… There’s a state that veteran Hollywood actors can reach, beyond ravenous ambition, but with retirement still distant, that seems to make them contented as professionals and mellow as people. Kevin Bacon, now 65, has hit that sweet spot. Continually employed for decades, he shares a Manhattan apartment as well as a Connecticut farm with his wife of 35 years, Kyra Sedgwick, and their two adult children, Travis and Sosie. Bacon is in a country band with his brother, Michael, and otherwise channels any musical overspill into adorable Instagram videos of the Family Bacon (barnyard animals included) covering pop songs old and new. The hunger of the 1980s lead-actor-in-waiting, the frustration of the bit-player in mid-career who kept a wary eye

Shah Rukh Khan gets Pen Marudhar on board Dunki; Distributor promises BIGGER release than Salaar in North

Shah Rukh Khan is riding on what can be termed the peak of his career. A day back, Hombale Films announced that their gangster action film, Salaar, will hit the big screens on December 22, 2023, clashing with Shah Rukh Khan's next, Dunki. The announcement shocked everyone as it's a gutsy move to clash with a superstar riding high on the success of back-to-back 500 crore films. Hombale sources however claimed to show confidence in their product and distribution of Anil Thadani. And now, Bollywood Hungama has exclusively got to know that Pen Marudhar has come on board as the distributor of Dunki. "Pen will be releasing Dunki in most of the territories in India. After the historic success of Jawan, Pen will be looking to give Dunki a wide release across the country. They had several meetings with SRK and his co-producer Gaurav Verma over the last few months and have devised a model to give Dunki an optimum release. Rajkumar Hirani and Jio have also shown complete faith in th

‘Truly unwatchable’: writers on their toughest scenes of movie violence

For the return of the gory Saw franchise, Guardian writers remember the hardest scenes of big screen violence they’ve had to endure A rape-revenge thriller told in reverse, Gaspar Noé’s infamous provocation opens with the revenge part first, as two men (Vincent Cassel and Albert Dupontel) embark on a frantic search for the monster who sexually assaulted and mutilated the woman (Monica Bellucci) at the center of their lives. As they descend into a BDSM club called The Rectum, Noé levels his own kind of assault on the audience, with the camera swirling relentlessly down this chaotic inferno and the soundtrack enforcing a feeling of deep disorientation, like a carnival ride due for decommission. When one of the men finally identifies their target – falsely, as it happens – he pulverizes his face with a fire extinguisher, the camera following every swing. Irréversible will later stage the rape through one long, pitilessly static take, but this sequence is a blow to the solar plexus, and w

SCOOP: Red Chillies team meets producers of Animal; averts ugly fight over screens for Shah Rukh Khan’s Dunki and Prabhas’ Salaar

The clash of Prabhas-starrer Salaar and Shah Rukh Khan-starrer Dunki on December 22 has sent shockwaves across the industry. The trade and exhibitors got worried since it’s become a norm for distributors to fight tooth and nail over sharing of screens. The exhibitors are also put in a spot as they are often compelled to choose a film out of the two. As a result, theatres across the country have been bracing to tide over this sticky situation on December 22. But if sources are to be believed, then the exhibitors and trade can heave a sigh of relief. A source told Bollywood Hungama, “Salaar will be distributed by Anil Thadani’s AA Films, who are also the distributors of Animal, starring Ranbir Kapoor, which releases on December 1. There was a worry among the makers of Dunki that AA Films might tell theatres that they would get a chance to play Animal, a very highly awaited film, only if they agreed to screen Salaar over Dunki on December 22. Many distributors in the past have indulged i

Dunki vs Salaar: Karan Johar changes the release date of Sidharth Malhotra-starrer Yodha out of respect for Shah Rukh Khan, Prabhas

Earlier this week, the industry was left stunned as the makers of Salaar decided to release the Prabhas-starrer on December 22 and thereby clash with Shah Rukh Khan’s highly awaited film, Dunki. The action flick was initially scheduled to release on September 28. Now that it got pushed to the Christmas week, it has had an effect on the other releases of the month as well. Bollywood Hungama has learned that Yodha, which is scheduled to release on December 15, will move to another date. A source told Bollywood Hungama, “Yodha is produced by Karan Johar’s Dharma Productions. Karan realized that it’ll be difficult for Yodha to retain screens in the second week once Dunki and Salaar arrive in cinemas. Moreover, it’ll become challenging even for Dunki and Salaar’s distributors since theatres would not want to lose out on Yodha, especially if it does well.” The source continued, “Karan Johar has a long association with Shah Rukh Khan, which is well known. Also, he’s close to Prabhas as well

‘Everything became a lie, a performance’ – Werner Herzog on Soviet Russia

The German director is championing Georgian film-maker Rezo Gigineishvili’s movie about the dying days of the USSR. But, he says, he won’t be drawn into contemporary political debates What was Stalin like when he was ill? Did he have stomach pains? Did it make him sad? In Rezo Gigineishvili ’s film Patient #1, a frail communist leader in the 1980s Soviet Union seeks urgent answers to these questions as he feels his life slipping from him. But the comrade he calls from his hospital bed provides no reassurance: Stalin was never ill, he was only ever strong. Spurred on to live up to the dictator they called the Man of Steel, the general secretary brushes off his doctors’ concerns and orders to be driven to the Kremlin. But he dozes off before his limousine starts rolling, and the motorcade merely circles the hospital grounds: a melancholy image of a Russian empire locked in ever-repeating cycles of history. Ex-CBFC member Ashoke Pandit REACTS to Vishal’s corruption allegations against the board; demands CBI enquiry

While audiences were eagerly awaiting to see this new world, the makers have unveiled the teaser of sci-fi action drama on September 29. Along with glimpses of action, the teaser also features some intense VFX used to create a different era and time period. A source close to the film said, “Jaccky Bhagnani wanted to spare no expense in bringing a world-class cinematic spectacle which has top-notch visual effects, an epic scale, and an engaging storyline. ‘I’m 90. I worry if I’m gonna make it to lunch’: Michael Caine and John Standing on wives, war and feeling like the Queen

The actors star alongside the late Glenda Jackson in The Great Escaper, the moving real-life story of a D-day veteran. They reflect on class, communism and female cage-fighting Michael Caine wears two watches: an analogue for the time and an Apple for everything else. It even knows his pulse, he says, impressed. Right now, it’s telling him his flat is 26C: warm enough for his wife, Shakira, to pour iced coffee into his flask, but not hot enough for those balcony doors to be open: “It’s blowing a bloody gale in here!” I slide them shut slightly. Is that OK? A bit more. Enough? Bit more. I close them completely. He’s happy now. Continue reading... from Film | The Guardian https://ift.tt/xhgqfj7 via IFTTT

As Salman Khan’s Tiger 3 gears up for release, Yash Raj Films adds the YRF Spy Universe logo to the trailers of Ek Tha Tiger, Tiger Zinda Hai and War

This was an exciting week for cinegoers as they were treated to the release of promos for several upcoming films. One teaser that stood out was that of Tiger 3. Starring Salman Khan, it is one of the most awaited films not just due to the superstar’s presence and the popularity of the earlier parts, Ek Tha Tiger (2012) and Tiger Zinda Hai (2017). But this is also because it is the next instalment in the YRF Spy Universe. Hrithik Roshan-starrer War (2019) and Shah Rukh Khan-starrer Pathaan (2023) are also a part of it. In fact, Salman even played the part of Tiger in Pathaan. The scenes of Salman and SRK together played a huge part in enhancing the film’s collections. And now, Shah Rukh’s Pathaan character will play a key role in Tiger 3, due to which the action entertainer is expected to be yet another blockbuster of 2023. And now, Bollywood Hungama has learned of an interesting development. Yash Raj Films (YRF) has incorporated the YRF Spy Universe logo in the trailer of the previous

Saw X review – torture porn horror returns with more blood, less value

Stomachs will churn once again in an attempt to rewind the clock for the fatigued franchise but there’s ultimately little of worth here It’s a strange existential feeling to be seated in front of a Saw film once again, a return not just to a franchise but an entire torture porn subgenre. As a screaming woman is forced to cut off her leg and suck out a litre of blood from her fresh wound in order to save her head from being sliced off by serrated wire, one might start wondering the hows and whys of what got us here. While financial greed is the obvious studio motivator (cheaply made horror still the most reliably profitable genre in Hollywood), it’s curious to ponder why we might want to endure another two hours of stomach-churning gore especially when served on such a musty old platter. The decision to kill the series big bad Jigsaw in Saw III was fitting given the franchise obsession with cattle-prod shock value but it also left the makers in a trap they then struggled to get out o

Nightmare review – atmospheric property horror treads line between dreams and reality

A young woman is tormented in her sleep in this crepuscular debut feature from Norwegian writer-director Kjersti Helen Rasmussen If there is one place you would have thought a sleep-deprived person might be able to stop herself dropping off, it’s in a lecture about sleep. But that’s what this atmospheric but somewhat heavy-handed debut feature from Norway has its protagonist Mona (Eili Harboe) do as she is introduced by dishevelled academic Aksel (Dennis Storhøi) to the possibility that she has become the victim of the mythical incubus Mare. This may explain a recent run of freakish dreams in which she’s tormented by a vampiric doppelganger of her caring boyfriend Robby (Herman Tømmeraas). Nightmare also belongs to the school of property horror already occupied by The Tenant and Mother! Left alone by Robby, a high-flyer preoccupied with some kind of algorithmic investment venture, Mona is charged with renovating their sprawling new apartment which they acquired on the cheap after its

Aditya Chopra to lay the foundation of Spy Universe with Salman Khan's Tiger 3 - Ready to integrate Tiger vs Pathaan, War 2 & Alia Bhatt film

What has transformed itself into the YRF Spy Universe in today's time, started back in 2012 with the Salman Khan-led Ek Tha Tiger. The film proved to be a blockbuster, leading itself to Tiger Zinda Hai (2017). The historic success of both Tiger films has led Salman Khan to earn the tag of being the "OG" of YRF Spy Universe, alongside the flamboyant Hrithik Roshan and humane Shah Rukh Khan. The crossover of spy films also started with Tiger making a seeti-maar appearance in the introduction of SRK as Pathaan in Spy Universe, elevating the impact of the film for the audiences. And now, Bollywood Hungama has another exclusive scoop on Tiger 3. A trade source informs that Tiger 3 is set to lay the path for Spy Universe ahead. "The story of Tiger 3 will decide the path ahead for films like Pathaan, War 2, and the yet untitled Alia Bhatt film. Maneesh Sharma and Aditya Chopra have chalked out the premise of Tiger 3 like a true blue universe film that opens up several stor

The Exorcist review – Friedkin’s head-swivelling horror is still diabolically inspired

The 50th anniversary extended director’s cut of the 1973 tale of teenage possession still shocks William Friedkin’s deadly serious contemporary horror, adapted for the screen from the bestseller by novelist William Peter Blatty, is back now in cinemas for its 50-year anniversary in the extended director’s cut. This is the film that whispered its evil into the ears of US audiences traumatised by political and generational upheaval. It is also the great ancestor of the entire horror genre: a 132-minute jump scare – with horribly malign slow sections – taking place in upper-middle class America rather than some exotic central European locale. (I have in the past suggested that it brought supernatural fear into the American suburbs ; well, I should admit that Georgetown in DC is hardly a suburb, in fact the point is that it is very near the political centre of the free world.) Ellen Burstyn plays movie actor Chris MacNeil, a single mother ordinarily resident in California but currently r

Where the Wind Blows review – a heady mix of gangster lore, lust and lawlessness

Hong Kong stars Aaron Kwok and Tony Leung Chiu-wai play corrupt police officers in Philip Yung’s ambitious but over-the-top crime epic This stunning-looking but chronologically restless Hong Kong-set crime epic unfurls across 50-odd years from the mid-20th century; it revolves around two frenemy protagonists, corrupt police officers played here by Aaron Kwok and Tony Leung Chiu-wai, who were inspired by real-life Hong Kong cops/triad front men back in the day. Altogether, it’s a heady mix of potted history, period detail, violence, gangster lore, lust and lawlessness on which writer-director Philip Yung ( Port of Call ) really goes to town, splashing budget money like petrol all over the place and then throwing a lighted match on top just to see the pretty flames. The ambition and swagger is undeniably admirable, but the end result is a bit of a charred mess – or perhaps more flatteringly a burnt offering to some of the many film-makers Yung (a former film critic) clearly has the hots

Time Addicts review – drug-fuelled, time-travelling fairytale in Melbourne

A mission to steal a bag full of crystal meth sparks an enjoyable labyrinthine sci-fi adventure for two bickering addicts Denise (Freya Tingley) and Johnny (Charles Grounds) are drug buddies living in present-day Melbourne. When they’re not getting high, they spend their time mooching about, bickering, and arguing about whether some of the fancier words Johnny uses are real. (Funnily enough, most of the time they are.) They are what the cops might uncharitably describe as no-hopers. In what turns out to be a labyrinthine time-travelling plot, one day, the dirty duo’s regular drug dealer, Kane (Joshua Morton), sends them on a mission to a dilapidated house to steal a bag full of crystal meth, a chore that will clear their debt to him. Kane warns them not to try the supply, but of course garrulous Johnny does and within seconds he evaporates with a snap and whoosh of wind right before Denise’s face. In an edit, he finds himself in the same house but 25 years or so in the past, when the

End of Term review – art-school horror is fusion of slasher and country-house whodunnit

Weird goings-on in a basement lead to Cluedo-ish suspects and piecemeal flashbacks, but here it is the audience that suffers in the name of art ‘So, you call yourself conceptualists, do you?” says the straight-arrow detective quizzing Melissa (Chelsea Edge), a cool-customer art student with three long lacerations on her face. “Mostly. Ashley wasn’t,” Melissa replies. “Unless anti-conceptualism is a concept. She was always about being in the moment. Expressionism. Impressionism.” End of Term has a fondness for bandying around the art-theory big talk, but this silly but stolidly genre project could sorely use a conceptual cutting edge itself. Melissa is getting questioned after being found strapped to a chair in the blood-splattered basement of Ford Barrington art school. Strangely, there are no bodies – except for that of snooty art critic Damian Self (Ronald Pickup) in the nearby space for the students’ end-of-term exhibition. In Usual Suspects-style piecemeal flashbacks, Melissa fil

Debt-ridden Future Group’s Food Hall vacates Salman Khan’s property in Santacruz, Mumbai; taken over by Food Square at a rental of Rs. 1 crore a month

The gourmet supermarket Food Hall was famous not just for its exotic and expansive variety of food but also because it was frequented by several celebrities. It Lives Inside review – standard-issue schlock horror has its moments

This Indian American monster movie has interesting touches of cultural specificity but it’s a mostly familiar formula There’s a swirl of the old and the new in the hokey pre-Halloween horror It Lives Inside, a balance that could have benefited from a lot more of the latter – because when the first-time director Bishal Dutta does try to add freshness to the familiarity of formula, he manages to carve his film its own place within two overstuffed subgenres, flashes of intrigue as he veers between schlocky curse and even schlockier monster movie.
