‘You have to get over the me thing’: Kevin Bacon on money, marriage – and learning to live with himself

Kevin Bacon, Hollywood’s great survivor, first set hearts fluttering in the 1984 classic Footloose. Now 65, he’s back on the big screen again. Here, he talks about his band, politics, family, embracing change and, most of all, learning selflessness… There’s a state that veteran Hollywood actors can reach, beyond ravenous ambition, but with retirement still distant, that seems to make them contented as professionals and mellow as people. Kevin Bacon, now 65, has hit that sweet spot. Continually employed for decades, he shares a Manhattan apartment as well as a Connecticut farm with his wife of 35 years, Kyra Sedgwick, and their two adult children, Travis and Sosie. Bacon is in a country band with his brother, Michael, and otherwise channels any musical overspill into adorable Instagram videos of the Family Bacon (barnyard animals included) covering pop songs old and new. The hunger of the 1980s lead-actor-in-waiting, the frustration of the bit-player in mid-career who kept a wary eye

You Resemble Me review – portrait of the ‘female suicide bomber’ who wasn’t

Expertly blending fiction, news footage and interviews, this potent debut pieces together the events leading to Hasna Aït Boulahcen’s killing by French police Dina Amer is a former Vice News journalist making a fierce feature debut with this vehement, focused and often disturbing movie, plausibly and sympathetically creating a backstory for a real-life case and finally aligning the fictionalised mise en scène, news footage and interviews with expert assurance and care. You Resemble Me is an imagined response to the case of Hasna Aït Boulahcen, a young French woman of Moroccan descent who had been radicalised by Islamic State and was killed in 2015 during the raid on a Paris apartment building after the terrorist attacks on various targets, including the Bataclan theatre. The siege culminated in a shootout and an explosion; afterwards excitable media reporters claimed Aït Boulahcen was Europe’s “first female suicide bomber”, with much prurient commentary about her former troubled lif

Pathaan: Siddharth Anand says Shah Rukh Khan has been ‘soft target’ in recent years; breaks silence on boycott calls: ‘Audiences came out in large numbers and supported it’

Riding high on the success of Pathaan, filmmaker Siddharth Anand has now given two back-to-back blockbusters. After War and Pathaan, he has become the undisputed number-one director of his genre in India. Starring Shah Rukh Khan, Deepika Padukone & John Abraham, the film has already collected Rs. 591 crores gross worldwide! But, the film did face its fair share of controversies especially when boycott calls were made after ‘Besharam Rang’ was released. Several outfits had raised objections to Deepika Padukone wearing a saffron bikini. Speaking to Deadline, when asked if he was worried about the negativity around Pathaan ahead of its release, he said, “All I know is they tried to boycott Pathaan and audiences came out in large numbers and supported it. I think if you’re going to boycott something or raise your voice against it, there has to be some merit in that. It has to be substantiated with some facts and some reality. What they were trying to do with Pathaan was just ridiculous

Husband review – family-man study is Made in Chelsea meets Curb Your Enthusiasm

Docu-comedy follows married directors Josh Appignanesi and Devorah Baum to New York in a subtle follow-up to The New Man Film-maker Josh Appignanesi has in the past made successful movies: Song of Songs , in the high arthouse mode in 2005, and popular satire The Infidel in 2010. But co-directing with his wife, author and academic Devorah Baum, he has recently got in front of the camera and hit a rich new seam of autofictional or possibly autofactual docu-comedy. The New Man documented – or sneakily semi-fabricated – Appignanesi as the hyper-annoying expectant dad with madly dishevelled hair who is unable to help his pregnant partner in any practical way, and feels existentially undermined by the whole process. Now Appignanesi and Baum are back: it is three years later and they have two children. Baum is going to New York on a prestigious signing/lecture tour to promote her book about feelings: Appignanesi is going along (and so are the kids, and a niece to look after them) to make

Varun Dhawan, Janhvi Kapoor starrer Bawaal postponed due to VFX and technical requirements

Varun Dhawan fans have been eagerly waiting to see the actor on the big screen and Bawaal added to anticipation as it was bringing together VD and Janhvi Kapoor for the first time on the big screen. However, it seems that they have to wait a little more since the latest update on that front is that the film is witnessing a few delays due to technical issues. Sources close to the film claimed that the Sajid Nadiadwala production may be pushed further because Nitesh Tiwari and the team of the film are keen on using a special kind of technology for the film. Sources claim that the filmmakers are quite ambitious about the onscreen presentation of Bawaal and hence are even shooting it using a special technology in Poland. Confirming the same, the director Nitesh Tiwari explained that in order to maintain the quality of the film, they decided to postpone its release, instead of compromising on the effects. He said, “The visual finesse we want to achieve on these sequences will need more time

Jethica review – stalker meets his deadpan match in comedy-horror

A largely improvised script gives this low-budget feature spontaneity, as it deftly moves from creepy to comic by way of the supernatural This low-budget comedy-horror feature gives most of its cast “screenplay by” credit, so it’s quite likely they sort of made it up as they went along, or at least substantially improvised a pre-agreed story. Nothing wrong with that, especially since that spontaneity is really felt in the performances, particularly from Will Madden as a manic stalker with a slight lisp named Kevin who won’t shut up. Disgorging an unceasing, frenzied torrent of verbiage, Kevin has followed Jessica (Ashley Denise Robinson) from Los Angeles to New Mexico where she grew up. The title is a not especially amusing reference to Kevin’s speech issue; he stands outside her window calling for her at all hours, ranting about his feelings for her, emitting passive-aggressive fumes of toxicity that grow increasingly more aggressive-aggressive. Luckily, Jessica is staying with her

Triveni is now ready to roll his next two directorial ventures under his banner. While more details on both films are being kept under wraps, both are set to feature prominent A-list actors and roll in the next 12 months. Beyond Suresh’s directorial films, there is an exciting slate of content in development with young and fresh writers and creators, all set to be la

Sublime review – refreshingly understated queer coming-of-age tale

Avoiding schmaltzy pitfalls, this moving drama about two friends nearing adulthood offers a modern ideal of masculinity Unlike many queer coming-of-age films – which can lapse into sentimental self-flagellation – Argentinian director Mariano Biasin’s light-touch drama handles the thorny process of coming out in refreshing fashion. Friends since childhood, Manu (Martín Miller) and Felipe (Teo Inama Chiabrando) are inseparable during their teenage years. When not playing together in a band, the pair hang out at the beach or simply lounge about in their rooms, talking about everything and nothing. Though each has a girlfriend, their attitudes to dating are completely different. While Felipe has a van fitted out just for the purpose of hanky-panky, Manu’s first sexual experience leaves him with more questions than answers. Awakened to his desire for Felipe, Manu slips in and out of sexy daydreams as the struggle to hide his true feelings grows increasingly difficult. Continue reading...

Back in March 2022, Netflix announced that Kareena Kapoor Khan, Jaideep Ahlawat, and Vijay Varma were coming together to star in Sujoy Ghosh's untitled film. The film marks the digital debut of Kareena. It is a screen adaptation of one of Keigo Higashino’s most acclaimed novel, “The Devotion of Suspect X”. Now, Kareena has wrapped the project. Speaking to Variety, Kareena Kapoor described the Sujoy Ghosh project as “dramatically different”. “For me, it’s very different because obviously you’re used to seeing me in all the mainstream movies, which has the song, the dance, the gloss, the glamour. Both these films (Sujoy Ghosh & Hansal Mehta’s next projects) are shockingly different,” Kareena said. The film follows the story of a “single mother and her daughter who commit a crime and a neighbor who helps them cover it up amidst a police investigation.” The film is produced by 12th Street Entertainment, Northern Lights Films in association with Boundscript and Kross Pictures and ma

The Wire review – locals deal with razor-sharp border fence in migrant study

Documentary sheds light on responses to a fence designed to keep migrants of the EU Schengen area, a dizzyingly complex issue Endless newsreel and column inches have been devoted to Europe’s migrant crisis over the past decade, and we are no nearer to getting to grips with the problem. This documentary by Croatian director Tiha Gudac opens up a fresh perspective by focusing principally on the effects on destination or transit countries: namely a beautifully sylvan stretch of the Croat-Slovenian border demarcated by the Kupa River and, now, horrible lengths of coiled razor wire laid down by the EU to prevent migrants from breaching the Schengen area. The border fence sullies farmland and forests, complicates river tourism and separates Croatian and Slovenian communities who have ties going back centuries. The Balkan region is one with particular sensitivity to artificial segregation, and the local people tentatively fight back: early on, we see Croats and Slovenians joining up for a

Bigg Boss 16: Shalin Bhanot dances, sings, and shows his happiness after the eviction of Tina Datta

Ever since its inception, Shalin Bhanot and Tina Datta have been garnering attention owing to the multiple phases of their relationship, which has transitioned from hatred to friendship to love to hatred again. While audiences were left confused about their feelings about each other, all the drama of their love-hate has now come to an end with the Uttaran actress being evicted from the reality show. On the other hand, considering the current scenario of relationship between Shalin and Tina, the Grihasti actor couldn’t be happier about her elimination and didn’t leave any chance to showcase the same on camera. In a video that has been doing the rounds, Shalin Bhanot is seen speaking about how the elimination of Tina Datta has made him feel so much better about his health with his ‘mandali’ Shiv Thakare and MC Stan. The actor is seen dancing, singing, and thoroughly enjoying himself after Tina left the show. This did not go down well with Archana Gautam who also expressed her anger on Bh

Vicky Kaushal plays DJ Mohabbat in Anurag Kashyap’s Almost Pyaar with DJ Mohabbat

After much speculation surrounding the role on whom the film’s title is based, Anurag Kashyap reveals Vicky Kaushal as DJ Mohabbat in his directorial Almost Pyaar with DJ Mohabbat, co-starring Alaya F and Karan Mehta. This also marks the fourth collaboration between Anurag Kashyap and the actor, who plays a special role and will feature in a never-seen-before avatar in the coming-of-age romantic film. Talking about the special role of Vicky Kaushal in the film, Anurag Kashyap said, “The character of DJ Mohabbat is so integral to the story, that I wanted someone special to play it. DJ Mohabbat is the voice of love, and is the conduit between two stories and I wanted someone who is that. Someone everyone loves because they trust and believe him. Vicky is that to me since I’ve known him. Always speaks his heart, never forgets, is grateful to his audience and people and the characters he plays. When I asked ‘if not SRK then who?’. My whole cast and my daughter and her friends in unison sai

Anurag Kashyap expresses regret for turning down Sushant Singh Rajput's invitation to collaborate

Anurag Kashyap recently made headlines where he expressed guilt over his public statement about his Dev.D actor Abhay Deol and privately about the late Sushant Singh Rajput. In an interview, Anurag accused Abhay of being difficult to work with, claiming that the actor insisted on staying in a five-star hotel separate from the rest of the cast and crew. Abhay had denied this.  Anurag had revealed shortly after Sushant's death that he had refused to speak with him about a project because he was resentful of being ghosted by the actor in the past. The filmmaker discussed his differences with Abhay and Sushant in a new interview with Showsha. He said, “It’s taken me a year-and-a-half of sickness to realise a lot of things. I was so reactive; I would say things. I would say things out of anger, out of reaction, to things I felt perturbed by. It took me time to realise that I’m shouting, I’m shouting in a room full of people shouting. Nobody’s listening to each other, not just to me. Tha

Saint Omer director Alice Diop: ‘I make films from the margins because that’s my territory, my history’

Raised in a Paris banlieue, the documentary-maker is now in the spotlight thanks to her Venice prize-winning first feature, based on the true story of a woman accused of killing her baby “I have a voice that doesn’t carry very well,” says French film-maker Alice Diop, when I tell her I can’t quite hear what she’s saying. We meet in a cafe near her home in the working-class district of Montreuil, on the eastern edge of Paris. It is busy with lunch parties, and the combination of Diop’s French – she speaks fast and quietly – with the occasional crashes of crockery isn’t ideal for discussing the complex, challenging new film she has made. Still, if Diop’s speech doesn’t carry acoustically, it’s a different matter with her artistic voice. After a significant career as a documentary-maker, Diop’s feature film debut, Saint Omer , is resonating worldwide. It won two awards at the Venice film festival last year and was France’s entry for the best international feature at the Academy Awards,

He had stated, “We want the euphoria around (Shah Rukh Khan’s) return to reach a crescendo by January 25, the release date of Pathaan. Mission Majnu: Adnan Siddiqui calls out ‘misrepresntation of Pakistanis’ in the Sidharth Malhotra starrer spy entertainer

Sidharth Malhotra returns to his patriotic avatar with Mission Majnu but this time he was seen essaying the role of a 70s spy in Pakistan, working for India. Co-starring Rashmika Mandanna, the film premiered on Netflix a few days ago but it seems that the film has been facing a little backlash from Pakistanis for their misrepresentation. Joining the debate now is Pakistani star Adnan Siddiqui, who is known for his performance in Sridevi’s last film, Mom, in which he essayed the role of her husband. He took to social media to review the Shantanu Bagchi film and expressed his disappointment over the same. Adnan Siddiqui took to Instagram to share a long note about Mission Majnu and how it misrepresented Pakistanis and portrayed a very wrong image of the residents in the country. I mean come on, yaar with all

All Dirt Roads Taste of Salt review – experimental film pulls on the senses

Sundance film festival: Raven Jackson’s gorgeous, sparsely worded debut film evokes the non-linear memories of one Black woman in Mississippi There will be a moment in All Dirt Roads Taste of Salt, the gorgeous, unconventional debut from Raven Jackson, when the film’s spell works. It may be in the first 15 minutes, lulled by Mississippi’s lush soundscape and meditative shots of a southern summer, or an extended take in a hospital delivery room. It could wait until the final scene, an ode to memories already recorded and yet to come. The pull of this sparsely worded, deeply sensitive film will probably depend on what triggers one’s personal sentimentality and, more pertinently, how much you know about it going in. The plot is so loosely outlined, and the camera so frequently turned to hands over faces, that it could be difficult, sans context, to pick up on its ambitious logic: a series of non-chronological memories in the life of one Black woman, connected by the senses of touch and

Jacqueline Fernandez receives permission to travel to Dubai from Delhi High Court

Jacqueline Fernandez, who is currently being investigated by the Enforcement Directorate owing to her alleged involvement in the Sukesh Chandrashekhar Rs. 200 crore extortion case, has been granted the permission to travel abroad for professional commitments, albeit with certain conditions. The actress had earlier approached the Delhi Patiala High Court seeking the permit for travelling abroad to attend her scheduled performance for PepsiCo India conference where she was to perform at the Annual Bottlers Conference in Dubai. On Friday, the Delhi Patiala High Court granted permission to Jacqueline Fernandez to travel to Dubai after her counsel argued that the actress may face lawsuit from the brand for non-participation if she doesn’t make it to the conference. Considering the same, the court has granted her permission to travel but along with that it has also observed that it will come along with some conditions. Owing to the fact that the ED is still investigating the Sukesh Chandrash

Akshay Kumar, Tiger Shroff, and Hema Malini attends the SCO film festival as it gets underway in Mumbai

He told reporters, "Somebody asked me about regional or how come it is an international thing here, nothing is regional today if the content has the power, it will go places, from regional to national to international. Keep making good content; there are no boundaries for good content. This (Appatha) is going to make great news at the box office and will be seen across the world." India is hosting the G20 Summit in 2023, and it also holds the SCO Presidency, accordin

Kangana Ranaut wants to rename Shah Rukh Khan’s Pathaan to ‘Indian Pathaan’; takes a dig saying ‘goonjega toh yahan sirf Jai Shri Ram’

Shah Rukh Khan is soaring high with the Pathaan response but Kangana Ranaut has a lot of things to say about it. A day after praising the movie and the business it is creating at the box office, the actress took to Twitter to take a dig at the film and change her tune altogether. Kangana Ranaut’s Twitter account was reinstated a few days ago and she is back to taking digs at the film industry. Kangana Ranaut mentions, “All those who are claiming Pathaan is triumph of love over hate, I agree but whose love over whose hate? Let’s be precise, whose is buying tickets and making it a success? Yes it is India’s love and inclusiveness where eighty percent Hindus lives and yet a film called Pathaan..Which shows our enemy nation Pakistan and ISIS in good light is running successfully, it is this spirit of India ???????? beyond hate and judgements that makes it Mahan… it is the love of India that has triumphed hate and petty politics of enemies.” Which shows our enemy nation Pakistan and ISIS in

Last Tango in Paris at 50: Bertolucci’s controversial drama remains troubling

The Italian director’s knotty drama remains a provocation, a film filled with lyrical beauty but also repulsive cruelty Revisiting films on the occasion of major anniversaries can be a disorienting reminder of time’s too-swift passage: that film is now 20/30/40 years old? How can that be? Why does it still feel so much younger than I do? In other cases, however, the film wears its advanced age in a way that makes complete sense, and so it is with Last Tango in Paris, released in cinemas in 1973. Now a half-century old, Bernardo Bertolucci’s lightning rod for scandal and debate has dated in many of the ways you might expect, but that’s not quite what I mean: at 50, the film’s age has now caught up with the overriding air of middle-aged despair and disarray that it always carried. In a sense, it was a film made to be forgotten, and then remembered with bittersweet, conflicted feelings, its significant beauty curdled over time. Bring up Last Tango in Paris in cinephile circles today –

Suniel Shetty’s family denies reports of Athiya Shetty-KL Rahul receiving luxurious gifts at their wedding: ‘Absolutely baseless and not true’

Actress Athiya Shetty and cricketer KL Rahul tied the knot this January 23 at Suniel Shetty's farmhouse in Khandala. The couple has been in a relationship for a long time and opted for an intimate wedding ceremony in presence of family and close friends. While not many celebrities were in attendance, it was reported that the couple received tremendous gifts which were in lakhs and crores. Several reports stated that Athiya Shetty and KL Rahul were gifted luxurious cars, bikes, watches and a flat. However, denying those reports, sources close to Suniel Shetty said, “All the reports published about the gifts are absolutely baseless and not true. We request the press fraternity to confirm details with us before publishing such incorrect information in the public domain.” Previous reports stated that Suniel Shetty gifted his daughter Athiya a luxurious apartment worth Rs. 50 crore in Mumbai. Salman Khan, who is a close friend of Suniel Shetty, gifted an Audi car to Athiya worth Rs. 1.6

Eddie Redmayne: ‘Until there’s a levelling, there are certain parts I wouldn’t play’

The Oscar winner on learning from his mistakes, his latest role as a serial killer nurse – and why he’s not wearing a wedding ring Drinking coffee in the restaurant of a central London hotel as jazz burbles away in the background, Eddie Redmayne is wearing faded blue jeans, a white sweatshirt and a scarf. No wedding band, though. Uh-oh. “‘Spotted without his ring!’” he says, mock-horrified. He misplaced it while shooting The Danish Girl eight years ago, which is only one of the reasons to lament that film. We’ll get to the others in good time. He bought a replacement ring then lost that, too, so he gave up. On jewellery, that is, not marriage. “I am incredibly happily married so I’m afraid there’s no scoop there,” he says apologetically. The tone fits with his demeanour, which is that of a Saturday boy at John Lewis: posh, affable, sincerely regretful that he doesn’t have the item in your size. He just turned 41 but could pass for mid-20s. His tousled hair is rust-coloured, his skin

Shaheer Sheikh rescues 16-month-old daughter, wheelchair-bound father-in-law and wife Ruchikaa Kapoor after fire breaks out in Andheri building

Last to last night was tough for the family of popular TV actor Shaheer Sheikh. For the unversed, on January 25, 2023, a massive fire broke out in the actor's building. Shaheer Sheikh's wife Ruchika Kapoor took to her verified social media handle and shared the details of the horrific incident. Pathaan protests in MP: Home Minister Narottam Mishra says there is no point in protesting now

Shah Rukh Khan’s comeback film Pathaan is expected to earn around Rs 50 crores at the box office on its first day (yesterday). The film has succeeded in pulling large crowds into the cinema halls in such a way that it is expected to break the record of the highest opening for a Bollywood movie. But amidst such scenes, some Right Wing organizations held some protests against Pathaan in parts of Madhya Pradesh yesterday, as reported by NDTV. The film was under fire for the saffron coloured bikini worn by Deepika Padukone in the song ‘Besharam Rang’ as that colour is considered sacred by the Hindus. But the state’s Home Minister Narottam Mishra has said that there is no point in having any protests now as there have been “corrections” made in the film by the CBFC (Central Board of Film Certifications). Speaking to a group of reporters, he said, “I believe all rectifications have been made in it (film). The Censor Board has made corrections. Controversial words have been removed. So, I don

Drift review – beautiful yet undercooked character study

Sundance film festival: Cynthia Erivo stars as a west African migrant who befriends Alia Shawkat’s American émigré in this too-quiet character drama Save for its few flashback moments of horrific, haunting trauma, Drift, the mostly quiet story of a west African migrant reeling from the unimaginable on a Greek resort isle, is easy on the eyes. Director Anthony Chen’s film, from a screenplay by Susanne Farrell and Alexander Maksik, gives harried aftermath the sheen of tranquil nobility, resilience hiding in plain sight – the crowd of barely clothed, languid white bodies dotting star Cynthia Erivo’s opening walk down the beach, the bleached yellow of the Mediterranean sun, the way Erivo’s Jacqueline slowly, carefully washes her one set of clothes. Even Jacqueline’s night ritual, arranging plastic bags of pebbles for a makeshift beach cave mattress, takes on the lulling rhythm of a reverie. It’s a lot of compelling aesthetic, anchored at most turns by Erivo’s committed, tense performanc

The Fabelmans review – Spielberg’s beguiling ode to a life made by movies will leave you on a high

The director’s 1950s-set semi-memoir brilliantly examines how we edit our own life stories, and the repercussions Steven Spielberg’s utterly beguiling fictionalised movie-memoir is his new adventure in Panglossian optimism, and offers us a stunning critical insight into his own work and how and why artists cauterise childhood pain and rewrite their youth. Movies are not exactly a matter of “escapism” – a lazy and misleading word – but all about intervening in real life, reordering the landscape, addressing frailty and vulnerability candidly, but from a position of strength. Young Spielberg is reborn as Sammy Fabelman, a little kid in 1950s New Jersey who is hit by cinema as by a bolt of lightning when he sees Cecil B DeMille’s The Greatest Show on Earth; he is stunned by the train crash scene, which he obsessively re-stages at home with a toy train set and an 8mm camera. Like most of the movie, this is based on a real event, or anyway a real memory, and Spielberg may also want us to

All the Beauty and the Bloodshed review – Nan Goldin takes on big pharma

Documentary follows Goldin, the artist who became addicted to OxyContin, as she confronts the wealthy art patrons who profited from its sale The part of the Sackler family behind the company Purdue Pharma have become notorious for their addictive opioid painkiller OxyContin which blighted innumerable American lives, while the Sacklers culturewashed the resulting colossal profits with conceited museum donations. There was hardly a museum in any first world capital city that didn’t salute their narcissism with a “Sackler wing” or a “Sackler courtyard”. Their story was first substantially told by the New Yorker’s investigative journalist Patrick Radden Keefe in his book Empire of Pain . Purdue’s creepy genius lay not in science, or pharmaceuticals, or medicine – but marketing. It wasn’t that they invented opioids; these had existed in various forms but had long been considered too dangerous for any but the most extreme pain management, or in terminal palliative care; Purdue simply pers
