‘You have to get over the me thing’: Kevin Bacon on money, marriage – and learning to live with himself

Kevin Bacon, Hollywood’s great survivor, first set hearts fluttering in the 1984 classic Footloose. Now 65, he’s back on the big screen again. Here, he talks about his band, politics, family, embracing change and, most of all, learning selflessness… There’s a state that veteran Hollywood actors can reach, beyond ravenous ambition, but with retirement still distant, that seems to make them contented as professionals and mellow as people. Kevin Bacon, now 65, has hit that sweet spot. Continually employed for decades, he shares a Manhattan apartment as well as a Connecticut farm with his wife of 35 years, Kyra Sedgwick, and their two adult children, Travis and Sosie. Bacon is in a country band with his brother, Michael, and otherwise channels any musical overspill into adorable Instagram videos of the Family Bacon (barnyard animals included) covering pop songs old and new. The hunger of the 1980s lead-actor-in-waiting, the frustration of the bit-player in mid-career who kept a wary eye

‘Viscerally terrifying’: writers on their scariest movie moments ever

For Halloween, Guardian writers look back at their biggest movie nightmares, from The Omen to It Follows There are major spoilers ahead Dario Argento’s equally gorgeous and grotesque Suspiria is here to cure anybody of their scary-movie snobbery. In this masterpiece, Suzy Bannion (Jessica Harper) is a graceful and wide-eyed American who shows up at the Tanz Academy, an elite ballet school in the shadows of the Black Forest. Whoever dreamed up this august institution, with its sumptuous art nouveau decor and gaudily vivid hues, may as well have written the Wes Anderson playbook. Young women float by in gauzy get-ups and then, one by one, they disappear. The creepy-crawly atmosphere has Suzy on edge from the jump – and interludes with a Dr Feelgood and a case of maggots falling from the ceiling do little to calm her nerves. In the film’s thrilling climax, a terrified Suzy works her way down a secret corridor and finds the building’s inner sanctum, where she faces off with a coven of

Apolonia Apolonia review – artist and film-maker evolve together in artworld memoir

The hypocrisies of the art world are exposed in this epic undertaking that sees the development of both the film’s subject and its director Filmed over the course of 13 years, Lea Glob’s dynamic and intimate portrait of figurative painter Apolonia Sokol also charts the twin evolution of two women: the one in front of the camera and the one behind it. Having grown up in a bohemian Parisian theatre founded by her parents, Sokol seems destined to make her name as an artist, though her journey to recognition is far from rosy. A graduate from the ultra prestigious École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts de Paris, Sokol however carries a more underground sensibility. When threatened with eviction, she turned the run-down theatre – her childhood home – into a haven for performers and activists. Her large-scale paintings of friends and acquaintances show them in a state of repose, yet Sokol’s energy is anything but placid. Forever sprinting from one adventure to another, she travels to Ame

Re-vamped: British horror film-makers Hammer and Amicus are back from the dead

The British studios, which filled screens with bloody fangs, gothic monsters and heaving bosoms, have been resurrected for the 21st century Think of a classic horror film with an archetypal character such as Frankenstein or Dracula, or a movie with a name that does what it says on the tin, like Tales from the Crypt or Beyond the Grave , and the chances are you are thinking of a product by one of the “twins of evil”. Hammer and Amicus were the studios that defined British horror cinema and bestrode the 1960s and 1970s, employing a wealth of British acting talent including Christopher Lee and Peter Cushing. Casts included names such as Michael Gough, Ralph Bates, Ingrid Pitt, Patrick Magee and Joan Collins. Continue reading... from Film | The Guardian https://ift.tt/vPy5cue via IFTTT

Mutiny in Heaven: The Birthday Party review – documentary is a warts-and-all sonic assault

Portrait of post-punk band’s debauched journey from Melbourne to London is a scuzzy time capsule filled with juicy revelations about Nick Cave and co The Birthday Party: the danger, drugs and rancour behind Nick Cave’s post-punk band Fans of the legendary post-punk band the Birthday Party will take to Ian White’s new film like pigs to slop, relishing the debaucherous badassery of its subjects and their drug-addled journey to greatness. The uninitiated will probably also have a good time with this full-tilt boogie, sonic assault of a documentary, which paints a warts-and-all portrait of the band and its members: Nick Cave, Mick Harvey, Rowland S Howard , Phill Calvert and Tracy Pew. These wrong-side-of-the-tracks artists played by their own rules, spat in the face of decorum and decency, and through a haze of putrid indulgence succeeded against the odds. Kangana Ranaut shares video; pleads her fans to watch Tejas after its disastrous start

Kangana Ranaut returned to theatres post the not-so-successful Chandramukhi 2 which featured her alongside Raghava Lawrence. While the film attempted to revive the blockbuster franchise which originally featured South stalwarts like Rajinikanth, Jyothika, Nayanthara, and Prabhu, failed to live up to the kind of blockbuster created by the 2005 film, the actress has now returned to theatres with another venture, Tejas. Although Tejas is a Bollywood film, it aims at touching the patriotic emotions within since it features Kangana in the role of an air force officer. However, despite a massive fan following on social media, Kangana Ranaut has been unable to withstand the box office pressure and her recent release led to a disastrous start at the box office. This has not gone down well with the actress and although she often blames the ‘movie mafia’ for the failure of her movies, this time around Kangana has called this to be the ‘post COVID effect’. Kangana Ranaut has taken to social med

‘Who doesn’t think they’re an outsider?’ David Fincher on hitmen, ‘incels’ and Spider-Man’s ‘dumb’ origin story

The director is one of Hollywood’s most unpredictable film-makers. He discusses making a shamelessly pulpy ‘B-movie’, the misogynistic legacy of Fight Club – and the urge to film 100 takes For anyone who thought David Fincher’s last film, Mank, was the beginning of a new highbrow phase for the director, his latest offering will be something of a jolt. Whereas Mank – on the writing of Orson Welles’ Citizen Kane – was a sumptuous, substantial, awards-friendly hymn to old Hollywood (it was nominated for 10 Oscars and won two), his new film, The Killer, is a pulpy, violent, almost wilfully two-dimensional hitman thriller adapted from a comic book. “I will never be a more mature film-maker. I will carry the 12-year-old me with me wherever I go,” he says proudly. Rather than growing up, it looks like Fincher is having fun – albeit in a highly controlled, Fincheresque way. He is in a particularly relaxed mode when we meet at a hotel in London. He looks healthy and he is full of wit and ener

Karan Johar says Shah Rukh Khan was the first man to make him comfortable with his sexuality: "He didn't make me feel lesser"

Filmmaker Karan Johar and superstar Shah Rukh Khan have been friends for decades. Karan addresses SRK as 'Bhai' and has worked with him on several projects. In a recent conversation, Karan opened up about his sexuality and how SRK helped him come to terms with it. On the show Be A Man Yaar, Karan Johar said, "He was born and raised in a very progressive environment. He comes from the theatre. He had worked with all kinds of people. My parents, perhaps, weren't able to understand things. My feminine side that was coming out so strongly was only met with laughter or with being made fun of. And then when I grew a little older, people got quieter about it. But I could tell whether there was a slight chitter-chatter about the way I was walking or speaking. I remember Shah Rukh Khan was the first, kind of like, man that didn't make me feel lesser for some reason. I feel like he accepted what in those days were considered being pansy, being effeminate or walking funny. H

Boudica review – rare cinema outing for Norfolk’s killer queen is bit of a hoot

This take on the first-century Iceni heroine looks like a home movie, and Olga Kurylenko’s lack of majesty and grit in the lead role doesn’t help Boudica, the Iceni queen who led an insurrection against the Roman colonisers in first-century Britain, is one of the great feminist icons from ancient history, but there are surprisingly few cinematic representations of her. There was a British TV show from 1978 called Warrior Queen that had the great Siân Phillips daubed in woad, a just-OK film from 2003 also called Warrior Queen that starred Alex Kingston, and a smattering of others in various languages, mostly for TV. And, of course, there’s the utterly iconic segment in Horrible Histories where Queen B (Martha Howe-Douglas) sings a grungy ditty about how her bloody campaign. (“Bow man, yeoman, smash the Roman foe man / All say ‘Yah / It’s Boudic-a!’”). But all that still leaves room for a great feature film about the toughest, most heroic gal to come out of Norfolk, up there with Edi

Burt Young obituary

Actor who found fame, and an Oscar nomination, as the roguishly endearing Paulie in the 1976 film Rocky In the late 1960s, Burt Young dashed off a letter to Lee Strasberg, who ran the Actors Studio in New York, hoping to be taken on as a student. “Seriously, Lee, I don’t know if acting has anything for me, or vice versa, but I’m treading water,” he wrote. “So see me.” The letter was intended to curry favour with a woman whom Young was trying to impress, and whose dream it was to study with Strasberg. Both she and Young were invited to audition. She quit after drying up during her first acting class but Strasberg was impressed by the stubby, paunchy Young, telling him: “You have huge tension about you. I feel you’re an emotional library.” Continue reading... from Film | The Guardian https://ift.tt/dgRyXCw via IFTTT

Hot Potato: The Story of the Wiggles review – documentary will wiggle its way into your heart

Film about the Australian musical phenomenon, who are akin to the Beatles for toddlers, is bubbly and insightful, if a tad long As a longtime admirer of the hit song Hot Potato , a profoundly poetic if slightly repetitive celebration of simple cuisine and the temperature at which it can be served, I was excited to have its origins unpacked in a new film exploring its creators. Early in, director Sally Aitken’s bubbly and quite well-made documentary about the Wiggles – the phenomenally successful troupe up there with Bluey and Bananas in Pyjamas as Australia’s biggest family friendly exports – we hear a sound bite of veteran interviewer Andrew Denton suggesting these barmy, toot-tooting, Shimmie Shaking entertainers ought to be taken seriously. Old Dads review – Bill Burr’s angry, unfunny Netflix comedy

The comedian makes his directorial debut with a bitter misfire about three older fathers railing against political correctness Judd Apatow has spent much of the twenty-first century showing America how dudes become men, his films built coming-of-age-like narratives for overgrown juveniles well into legal adulthood. In Knocked Up, Seth Rogen and Paul Rudd respectively modeled irresponsibility for twenty and thirtysomethings, and with This is 40, Rudd’s character stared down the barrel of middle age; in all cases, they arrived at the crucial realization that they need to stop clinging to vestiges of immaturity so they can provide for the people they care about. For these schlubs, the desire to stay young forever meant smoking weed during the daytime, bumping Wu-Tang with your friends and going to rock shows without getting your wife’s permission. For an ensemble in their 50s, however, rejecting the onward march of time becomes a far dicier proposition. In Bill Burr’s dire directorial d

Making a movie about 64-year-old Diana Nyad’s 110-mile swim: ‘She wasn’t bothered about sharks. The box jellyfish we didn’t know about’

A new drama charts the endurance athlete’s attempts to swim from Havana to Florida, accompanied by former girlfriend Bonnie Stoll and assorted marine predators. It’s a story of friendship, survival – and sharp elbows In 1978, Diana Nyad, then 29, decided to swim from Havana to Key West, Florida. Like everything else this endurance athlete does, she made the challenge seem like no biggie: a natural progression, even, for someone whose surname is derived from the word “naiad” (water nymph) and who has been accused of having a “superiority complex”. At about 110 miles, the journey would dwarf her previous accomplishments, such as circling the island of Manhattan in just under eight hours. But it wasn’t to be. Violent storms put paid to her attempt after she had covered nearly 80 miles in 42 hours and been blown far off course. Nevertheless, the Havana-to-Florida dream endured. As her 60th birthday loomed, and with three decades behind her as a sports broadcaster, Nyad set out to have an

First of a

I Know Where I’m Going! review – Powell and Pressburger classic is a pure joy

The story of a headstrong heroine who knows what she wants, but is waylaid by the elements and an unexpected romance is one of the most lovable films in British cinema history Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger’s 1945 classic, rereleased now as part of the BFI’s nationally touring Powell/Pressburger season, has to be one of the most purely lovable films in British cinema history. There is outright joy in that inspired, forthright title. Surely I’m not the only Powell/Pressburger superfan to have screamed halfway through this statement from Emeric Pressburger about his writing practice, in Kevin Macdonald’s biography: “But if I can help it, I never sit down to write the real script until I know where I’m going and I’ve worked out the rhythm and so on beforehand.” Was that deliberate? I can’t tell. I Know Where I’m Going! is a movie of romance and myth, comedy and whimsy, but fiercely rooted in reality – and geography. And it is very unusual, maybe entirely unique, in that it is set

EXCLUSIVE: Vikas Bahl reveals, “While prepping for Ganapath, I used to see making videos of S S Rajamouli and Sukumar’s films” also says, “I hope we can crack the story of Queen 2”

Ganapath – A Hero Is Born, starring Tiger Shroff, Kriti Sanon and Amitabh Bachchan, is all set to release in cinemas tomorrow, that is, October 20. Bollywood Hungama exclusively spoke to director Vikas Bahl about the film and a lot more. Since the time you debuted as a director, you have never repeated a genre. How do you manage to do so? Not many filmmakers could achieve this feat… Maybe, I just like different kinds of stories. While doing so, you have to break the genre. I think it’s a constant learning curve. When you are switching genres, you are always nervous as to whether or not you can pull it off. I like that nervousness. Maybe, the student inside me wants to constantly keep learning how to try new genres. When I was doing this film or even the next one (a horror), I used to sit for hours on YouTube and watch videos on how these films are made and how these genres are done. So, it was almost like going back to school. That’s exciting for me. I don’t want to get into a comfort

Bad loser: how Fair Play unravels the delusion of the ‘good guy’

The conversation-starting Netflix thriller shows a seemingly supportive man unravel when his fiancee starts outearning him In the beginning, Emily and Luke are golden. They’re ambitious and imminently wealthy young professionals, dressed in the sleek monochromes of quiet luxury. They’re so in love that they can’t even make it through a wedding without pawing at each other. When a bathroom tryst gets derailed by her period blood, it’s a silly prelude to their rushed engagement, a mess of passion and, in the new Netflix thriller Fair Play, an omen of pain ahead. The caustic debut film by the writer/director Chloe Domont sets up a model relationship in a rarefied and ruthless space. Emily (Bridgerton’s Phoebe Dynevor) and Luke’s (Alden Ehrenreich) love has all the hallmarks of something incipient and promising – they share an apartment, a bed, a lifestyle. But by dating each other, they are breaking company policy at the cutthroat Manhattan hedge fund where they both work. Their attract

Herd review – folk-indie vibe dominates queer backwoods zombie thriller

Despite a fairly predictable story, first-time director Steven Pierce makes some interesting tweaks to the formula with a final act that confounds expectations Like every zombie-themed movie ever, this low-budget American feature directed by debutant Steven Pierce (co-written by Pierce and James Allerdyce) has a subtext; this one so close to the surface it’s barely sub, about schisms that divide communities. Quite often, the factions in zombie stories cleave along class lines or ethnicity. But Herd mixes the formula up in a number of interesting ways; for starters, by casting as the heroines lesbian spouses Jamie (Ellen Adair) and Alex (Mitzi Akaha), city dwellers on a camping trip trying to heal marital wounds after the loss of a child. Thus the women are already semi-outsiders in rural Missouri where they’re visiting, although it’s near where Jamie grew up. Not that this puts her more at ease, given an abusive childhood growing up with her father, Robert, (Corbin Bernsen), that inc

Body swaps, timewarps and other fresh hell – the Sitges film festival 2023

Catalonia’s annual celebration of strange screen tales included a murderous birthmark, weretigers and a therapist overcome with ancient evil At this year’s International Fantastic film festival of Catalonia, I got bitten all over. Not by vampires or werewolves, alas, but by mosquitoes, which took advantage of the unseasonably hot temperatures on Spain’s Costa del Garraf to transform my body into a throbbing, misshapen mass, rather like William Hurt in Altered States. Still, this helped me feel a kinship with the protagonists of this year’s exercises in body horror, many of them bearing the imprint of Shudder, a streaming service available in the UK and Germany but not elsewhere in Europe. But it was one of their titles – Argentinian director Demián Rugna’s When Evil Lurks – that became the first Latin American movie in the festival’s 56-year history to win the Sitges award for best feature film. While audiences in the town’s big air-conditioned cinema lapped up major releases such as

The Kitchen review – high-energy drama of near-future rundown housing estate

Kibwe Tavares and Daniel Kaluuya co-direct a drama about a funeral-service worker looking for a way out of the chaotic housing block of the title There’s a rich mix of ingredients in this heartfelt and likably acted film from co-directors Kibwe Tavares and Daniel Kaluuya, set in a chaotic, favela-type London housing estate of the near future, nicknamed “the Kitchen”. It takes something from the French banlieue movies of Mathieu Kassovitz and Ladj Ly, while running a seedier and more downbeat version of the postmodern alienation of Total Recall or Blade Runner. But it is also a slightly sentimental-realist family drama, and I felt that for all its high-energy pyrotechnics, in its final moments The Kitchen paints itself into a bit of a narrative corner. The Kitchen setting itself is tremendously fabricated on screen, with top-notch special effects work; it is a spectacularly rundown housing block surrounded on all sides by glitzy new apartment buildings for the heartless better off. Th

Along with this film, the actor has an ambitious historical saga Chhava: The Great Warrior, which is the biopic on Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj. For the unversed, he was the son of the founder of the Maratha empire Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and Saibai Bhosale. Bollywood Hungama has come to know that the movie is all set to go on floors on October 16 in Mumbai. We have also come to know that the first schedule will be for a week. It is adapted from author Dr. Jaysingrao Pawar’s Marath

Piper Laurie obituary

American actor best known for her roles in the classic films The Hustler, Carrie and Children of a Lesser God For those who remembered Piper Laurie from her days as a contract player in a series of formulaic escapist pictures made by Universal Studios in the 1950s, it was hard to believe that the lonely young woman in Robert Rossen’s The Hustler (1961), who takes her own life when she is rejected by the pool shark Paul Newman , was one and the same. This Oscar-nominated performance was a surprise, and nothing Laurie did before or after touched it. Having proved that she could act, Laurie, who has died aged 91, immediately retired from the cinema. She returned 15 years later, in another guise, this time specialising in playing harridans, principally in horror movies. The most celebrated was Brian De Palma’s repulsive and compulsive Carrie (1976), for which she was also Oscar-nominated, this time as the religious mother of the pubescent Sissy Spacek, intoning “the first sin was intercou
