Blood Star review – young tearaway fights for survival in cat-and-mouse thriller

Vintage-car driver is chased through New Mexico by a small-town sheriff in Lawrence Jacomelli’s snappily shot debut Kicking off with tearaway Bobbie (Britni Camacho) zooming across the New Mexico badlands in her vintage Ford back to her no-good boyfriend, this film rides a two-lane blacktop straight for the heart of classic Americana. British director Lawrence Jacomelli dons the appropriate outlaw squint for this cat-and-mouse thriller – one that’s capable of picking out a sharp composition, too – but ultimately his debut is too disjointed to hit top gear. Ignoring her sister’s warnings about reconciling with her violent partner, Bobbie stops for petrol and brushes off the skeezy pestering of Sheriff Bilstein (John Schwab), but the purse-lipped lawman picks her up down the road for speeding and supposedly damaging his siren. They cut a deal for her to reimburse him for the damage – and our suspicions that something dodgy is going down are confirmed back at the gas station where she w

Medicine Man: The Stan Brock Story review – life story of America’s healthcare saviour

From British private school outcast to anaconda-wrestling cowboy to philanthropist, Paul Michael Angell’s documentary is of a life less ordinary As unbelievable life trajectories go, British private school outcast to South American cowboy to US primetime TV naturalist to American healthcare saviour must be up there with the weirder ones. The late philanthropist Stan Brock singlehandedly disproves the old F Scott Fitzgerald dictate about American second acts by – starting in 1985 – supplying free medical treatment to millions of uninsured people through his non-profit Remote Area Medical (RAM) . Related in this documentary with flashes of Boy’s Own brio, this flip into altruism is all the more remarkable in light of Brock’s borderline-abusive upbringing that pushed him as a young man into a stony self-reliance. Even in his 70s and ushering in-need citizens into RAM’s mobile clinics, Brock still cuts a strapping, athletic figure. In his heyday, droving on the world’s largest cattle ran

Arshad Warsi clarifies on his ‘joker’ comment about Prabhas in Kalki 2898 AD; calls him a ‘brilliant actor’

Kalki 2898 AD released earlier this year amid much fanfare as many celebrities couldn’t stop gushing about the Nag Ashwin directorial and its grandeur. Meanwhile, Arshad Warsi had expressed his thoughts on the film too wherein he appreciated a few aspects but also criticized a few. He went on address Prabhas of ‘being used as a joker’ which did not sit well not only with his fans but also with some celebrities from the South Indian film industry. After receiving much backlash on social media for his comments, Arshad Warsi now has issued a clarification about being misconstrued for his statement. He further insisted that his remarks were only directed to the character Prabhas played and was in no way insulting his acting skills. In fact, appreciating the talent of the Telugu superstar, Arshad told PTI, "Everybody has their own point of view and people like to interpret noise. I spoke about the character, not the person. He is a brilliant actor and he has proved himself again and a

Hellboy: The Crooked Man review – sputtering mess even a metric ton of makeup can’t conceal

A boring nemesis in a top hat bops around cackling while a wan Hellboy is enlisted to save a local man’s sweetheart in this inexplicable successor Fans of comic books, 00s horror and Guillermo del Toro will recall the latter’s crack at launching a mass-market franchise with Hellboy in 2004 , a peppy blend of pulp genre thrills, wisecracks and old-school effects with a very del Torovian occult-vibe. The casting in the title role of Ron Perlman as the half-demon/half-human shorn-horned, red-skinned, wisecracking, cigar-smoking good guy, along with Selma Blair as his pale but decidedly interesting sidekick/love interest Liz, is what made the first film, and to a lesser degree its successor Hellboy II: The Golden Army , sing. But the unholy mess of a reboot from 2019 , this time with a not-unlikeable David Harbour in the massive Right Hand of Doom glove, barely made coin, which makes this even lower-budgeted successor somewhat inexplicable. Just as Hellboy can smell evil in the forest air

Killer Heat review – overcooked Jo Nesbø adaptation is deathly dull

Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Shailene Woodley star in a very boring murder mystery streaming on Amazon What might seem like a relatively easy ask on paper – the director of a buzzy festival hit adapting a Jo Nesbø short story with three likable and attractive actors set on the camera-ready island of Crete – has become a bizarrely effortful slog in the misshape of Killer Heat, a dull and predictable sunshine noir that wastes the time of those involved as well as ours. Originally known as the far more appealing The Jealousy Man in print, the anonymously retitled mystery plays less like a real movie and more like a case-of-the-week episode of an ITV crime drama (without credits it’s not even 90 minutes long). Joseph Gordon-Levitt, revisiting similar yet considerably lesser territory to his role in Rian Johnson’s stylish 2005 thriller Brick, plays a run-of-the-mill private detective named Nick who is called to investigate a seemingly cut-and-dried death on a Greek island. Effortless skill, mixed salads and a certain impatience with life: Michael Palin remembers Maggie Smith

Smith’s costar in two 80s comedies shares his memories of an actor blessed with an instinctive grasp of her craft To work with Maggie Smith, as I did in The Missionary and A Private Function, was to be in the presence of pure acting gold. Maggie was so skilful and intuitive. She could portray the maximum of emotion with the minimum of effort. Nothing was ever wasted with Maggie. The slightest glance could contain so much information, the smallest gesture be loaded with such significance that you had to be absolutely on your toes to stay with her. The two films we made together were comedies, and Maggie’s impeccable comic timing was an absolute joy to watch and a privilege to be part of. Mike Newell on Maggie Smith: ‘She never bit me, but if she did bite, you stayed bitten’

Director of Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire says formidable actor brought many things to a set, including ‘terror’ Maggie Smith, Oscar-winning star of stage and screen, dies aged 89 I first met Maggie on the Harry Potter films, when she played Minerva McGonagall in Goblet of Fire . It wasn’t a very big part but she was always very notable, always poised in whatever she did – even when wearing a comedy hat. She brought a lot to the part, and to the set – and one of those things was terror. Maggie never bit me, but I think if she did bite you, you stayed bitten. Salman Khan starrer Sikandar shoot suffers amid Mumbai’s torrential rains; all-night action shoot called off on Wednesday, filming to resume today: Report

The torrential rains that engulfed Mumbai on Wednesday, September 25, brought the city to a near standstill, disrupting various aspects of life, including film productions. Salman Khan's upcoming action film, Sikandar, under the direction of AR Murugadoss, was one of the projects affected by the inclement weather. According to a report in Mid-day, the film crew had been diligently working at the SRPF Ground in Goregaon since the end of August, preparing for an elaborate action sequence. However, the heavy rainfall forced a change of plans. The lighting setup required for the scene posed a significant risk of electrical short circuits, prompting the production team to prioritize safety and temporarily halt the shoot. Salman Khan arrived at the set at 5 pm, prepared for an overnight shoot. A source close to the production revealed, "The shoot was to start at 7 pm, and the crew was on the set by 3 pm. But given the incessant rains, the direction team decided to call off the sho

The Teacher review – a Palestinian educator is troubled by his radical past

Saleh Bakri commands the screen as a teacher promoting nonviolence, who falls for British volunteer Imogen Poots while trying to protect a student looking for revenge Here is a drama-thriller from British-Palestinian film-maker Farah Nabulsi, set in the West Bank: a geopolitical vale of angry tears. There is some pretty broad-brush storytelling here, but it is really well acted, particularly by its male lead, Saleh Bakri, who might be remembered from his performance in Elia Suleiman’s autobiographical film The Time That Remains , playing the director’s father Fuad. (I also remember him in the 2013 Sicilian mob thriller Salvo .) Here Bakri plays Basem, a hardworking, idealistic and careworn Palestinian teacher of English, estranged from his wife (who is now living in Hebron) and troubled by his past. Basem has evolved away from his former life of radical resistance, now espousing nonviolent action; he is therefore deeply worried by a neighbouring boy and pupil Adam (Muhammad Abed Elra

SCOOP: Saif Ali Khan and Kareena Kapoor Khan to play villainous duo in Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s Prabhas starrer Spirit?

Filmmaker Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s Animal became one of the biggest blockbusters of Bollywood. Starring Ranbir Kapoor, Anil Kapoor, Rashmika Mandanna, Bobby Deol, Triptii Dimri among others, it nullified all the calculations of the trade as not many expected the film to reach this height. Now, naturally, his upcoming film Spirit is a highly anticipated film. It will also see Vanga team up with Prabhas for the first time. Their pair and the title has already made heads turn. Now, Bollywood Hungama has come across a scoop regarding the film, which is sure to raise the excitement levels surrounding it. We have learnt that Saif Ali Khan and Kareena Kapoor Khan will not only be starring in Spirit but will also be playing villains. Yes, you read it right. It will be a rare occasion where a couple married in real life will be playing a negative duo in the film. And their casting with Prabhas is sure to add another layer of excitement for the movie. So far, Saif and Kareena have worked togethe

Home Sweet Home: Where Evil Lives review – fresh take on pregnant-woman-in-peril horror

Unfolding in what looks like a single take, Thomas Sieben sends his protagonist into a house that’s haunted by historical trauma When Maria (Nilam Farooq) shows up 37 weeks pregnant at the attractive but remote country home of her husband Viktor (David Kross), you sense immediately that no good can come of this. If a character is pregnant in a film, it’s about even odds that said pregnancy will function as a way to increase their vulnerability – though not all films take this as far as this nifty little low-budget horror movie from talented German director Thomas Sieben, which combines the haunted house subgenre with pregnant-woman-in-peril to nicely nerve-jangling effect. Occult horror always needs a starting point, a first evil from which the later ghosties and bumps in the night derive. Some films take as their inciting incident a broader historical crime or atrocity and it’s into this category Home Sweet Home falls. The Herero and Nama genocide , conducted by imperial German forc

I’m Not Everything I Want to Be review – sex, fashion and addiction from Czech Nan Goldin

Libuše Jarcovjáková narrates her own life story from career obscurity to capturing the Prague underground and the fall of the Berlin Wall It’s likely that not too many people will have heard of photographer Libuše Jarcovjáková, but plenty of poseurs will pretend they were always fans after they see this. As it happens, the film makes it pretty clear that she wasn’t that well-known outside cognoscenti circles until a major 2019 show in Arles won rave reviews ; the struggle with obscurity, her refusal to give up, is one of the things that makes her such a winning subject here. That, and her gruff, deadpan voice which narrates this autobiographical reflection, told entirely through her photography, spiced up with a cannily deployed soundtrack of Foley noises and music, along with some nimble editing. Unfurled in unfussy chronological order, the film recounts how Jarcovjáková was born to a pair of artists who struggled themselves to establish their reputations in post-second world war Pr

Streaming: the best biker movies

The Bikeriders, Jeff Nichols’s drama starring Jodie Comer, Austin Butler and Tom Hardy, follows in the leather-clad slipstream of Easy Rider, Quadrophenia and more At 41, there’s still time for my midlife crisis to take an unexpected turn, but as yet I must confess that I have never known the pleasure of riding a motorcycle. As a London cyclist I can’t exactly claim danger avoidance as a reason, and as a keen driver I’d love to feel the open road minus the sensation barriers of doors and a windscreen. Still, biking is one of those things that movies have rendered so untouchably cool that real life can only make it less so – and even on my best day I’m not going to resemble midcentury Marlon Brando in head-to-toe leather. Nor Austin Butler and Tom Hardy, for that matter, though while Jeff Nichols’s very entertaining The Bikeriders , now on VOD, to some extent continues cinema’s love affair with handsome, squinting men astride their two-wheel steeds, it deromanticises the scene a bit.
