The highest grossing Black film-maker of all time is known for his superhero movies and reinventing the Rocky franchise. Now he’s made his most personal film yet – and it’s a vampire thriller We’re supposed to be talking about movies, but Ryan Coogler has family on his mind when we have our video call – parents, siblings, twins, ancestors and, most of all, his two daughters. “It’s all good, kids not up yet,” the director says in his Oakland drawl. He’s speaking from a New York hotel room, the morning after the premiere of his new movie, Sinners. But, sure enough, 10 minutes into our conversation, his daughters, three and five, come into the room and bundle on to his lap. “Aw, here’s my little ones, bro.” A toy boomerang flies into and out of shot. “Daddy’s gotta work,” he patiently explains. Noises off-screen and doors closing. Anyway, where were we? Continue reading... from Film | The Guardian https://ift.tt/7GuTr9S via IFTTT

In Alex Garland and Ray Mendoza’s brutal and immersive new film, memory informs the events that take place in real time to a unit of soldiers in Iraq Warfare , Alex Garland and Ray Mendoza’s assiduous new film on a single episode of the American war in Iraq, opens with a title card typical to a war picture: date, location, barebones summary – 11 November 2006, in Ramadi, Iraq. Navy SEAL team alpha one is supporting Marines in insurgents’ territory. And then one final, unusual detail in place of the standard “based on a true story” – “This film uses only their memories.” The “only” is an ominous indicator: this is a film working against the Hollywood tide to gloss, simplify or narrativize. Warfare, based primarily on Mendoza’s memories of that day as a former SEAL, as well as those of fellow soldiers and civilians present, is as much an experiment of translation as a cinematic achievement, a movie defined by both what it shows and what it does not. Much of the press surrounding Warfar...

Peter Dinklage and Juliette Lewis star in a horse opera set in a snowbound world of bars, brothels and wide open spaces Here is a western starring Peter Dinklage, but forget hot sun-baked gullies and leather-skinned cowboys riding sweatily through rattlesnake country. The Thicket takes place in a hard, snowbound wilderness interspersed with equally hard, snowbound little townships consisting mainly of bars and brothels. You can see the breath in the air and the blood on the snow. The plot is staple horse opera: a kidnapped maiden must be rescued by a motley group of good-ish guys with mixed motives, headed up by Dinklage playing a bounty hunter character offering a similar vein of dry, world-weary cynicism as his breakthrough role as Tyrion in Game of Thrones, only much less aristocratic. He is joined by Gbenga Akinnagbe as his right hand man, with whom Dinklage has nice chemistry, and Levon Hawke, as a naive young Christian whose sister has been kidnapped by ruffians. The ruffians a...

Sunita Ahuja made a public appearance in Mumbai recently to cheer on her daughter, Tina Ahuja, who was walking the ramp at a fashion show. Accompanied by her son Harshvardhan Ahuja, Sunita was in attendance to support Tina’s moment on the runway. However, the evening took an uncomfortable turn when the paparazzi began asking repeated questions about her husband, veteran Bollywood actor Govinda. While walking the ramp, one of the photographers called out to her, asking, “Govinda sir kahan par hai (Where is Govinda sir)?”. In response, Sunita made a ‘zip-it’ gesture’, clearly indicating that she didn’t want to entertain the question. The move left her son Harshvardhan chuckling, but the paparazzi continued to press her with questions about the 90s star’s absence. As the repeated queries persisted, Sunita’s mood visibly shifted. Irritated by the constant prodding, she eventually walked off the stage and snapped at the photographers, saying, “Address de doon kya (Should I give you the add...

Pawel Lozinski’s documentary collects conversations with passers-by he talks to from the window of his Warsaw flat Polish film-maker Pawel Lozinski has curated this amusing, cumulatively melancholy documentary which he has shot from the first-floor balcony in his flat in the Saska Kępa district of Warsaw. Over a number of years, and with a microphone discreetly attached to the chainlink fence at street level, he simply calls down to people going past and asks them to stop and talk about something, anything. There are a lot of dog-walkers and people with babies; most people smile or grimace politely and say they are not special enough to be featured in a film. A priest says he can’t talk because he is carrying the Holy Sacrament. Others obligingly talk: one woman sings a rather beautiful song, a man talks about being homeless, having just got out of prison. People confide their sadness at the loss of a loved one, though one woman sheepishly confesses her profound happiness that her ab...

Director Meghna Gulzar and Junglee Pictures are set to reunite for their third film together, Daayra, a crime-drama thriller starring Kareena Kapoor Khan and Prithviraj Sukumaran in lead roles. The project follows their past collaborations on Raazi and Talvar and is currently in pre-production. Described as a hard-hitting narrative that explores crime, justice, and the grey areas in between, Daayra brings together actors from different industries to depict the complexities of contemporary society. Marking her 25th year in Hindi cinema, Kareena Kapoor Khan shared her thoughts on the new project and said, “As I celebrate 25 incredible years in Hindi cinema, I'm thrilled to announce my next film, Daayra, with the incredible Meghna Gulzar in the director’s chair. I've long admired her work, from Talvar to Raazi, and to be directed by her is a dream come true. The opportunity to collaborate with the talented Prithviraj is also a highlight, and I'm drawn to the film's bold, ...

Randeep Hooda has opened up about a long-standing grievance from his past — being excluded from the promotions of Imtiaz Ali’s 2014 film Highway. In a candid chat on journalist Shubhankar Mishra’s YouTube podcast, the actor reflected on how his absence from the marketing campaign might have cost him significant career momentum at the time. “Maine bhi voh dekha aur mujhe bhi samajh nahi aaya Ranbir Kapoor ka iss picture se kya lena dena hai,” Randeep said, referring to the curious presence of Ranbir Kapoor at the film’s promotional events. (“I saw it too, and I also didn’t understand what Ranbir Kapoor had to do with this film.”) While Ranbir had no role in Highway, his presence during the film’s promotions drew attention. While the Kapoor boy and Alia Bhatt had started dating eventually, Hooda wasn’t sure if the actor’s involvement during the film, played any role in their love story. Randeep added thoughtfully, “Maybe that’s when their love story began, and if that moment brought th...

The release of the much-anticipated biographical film Phule, based on the life and legacy of social reformers Jyotirao and Savitribai Phule, has reportedly been postponed. This delay follows alleged demands by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) to remove or alter references to caste in the film — a move that has stirred widespread criticism in creative and activist circles. Anurag Kashyap’s Scathing Response Among the first from the film industry to react was director Anurag Kashyap, known for his outspoken views. Sharing an Instagram story that featured the news of the film’s delay, Kashyap wrote in Hindi: “Bhai India mein caste to exist hi nahin karti. Dhadak 2 mein bhi yahi bolta tha. Hamare leaders ne India mein caste system khatam kar diya hai. Baaki jinko nahin dikhta, woh chu**** hain.” The statement, steeped in sarcasm, targets the narrative that caste is no longer relevant or prevalent in Indian society — a view often portrayed in sanitized mainstream cinema and ...
