Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F review – fish-out-of-water Eddie Murphy chases past glories

Murphy’s maverick cop – and his theme music – are back to fight corruption, but four decades on there’s little energy to enliven their formulaic reunion Eddie Murphy isn’t finished yet – as he proved with his barnstormer of a performance as Blaxploitation pioneer Rudy Ray Moore in Dolemite Is My Name . But there’s something a bit tired and formulaic about this further go-around for his iconic Detroit cop Axel Foley from the Beverly Hills Cop action-comedy franchise which 40 years ago made Murphy an explosive Hollywood star – and whose catchy Axel F theme became an 80s anthem, duly revived here. He’s back for the fourth film, yet again leaving his Detroit turf to be a scruffy fish-out-of-water in the hilariously chi-chi world of Beverly Hills, yet again wryly noticing from the wheel of his car, on the way in, a montage of all the crazy California stuff, including a car registration plate reading: PRE-NUP. Axel’s grownup lawyer daughter Jane (Taylour Paige) is in Beverly Hills, menace

Queens of the Qing Dynasty review – unsettling but rewarding study of an unlikely friendship

Hypnotic odd-couple story of a teenager struggling with her mental health and a carer exploring their gender At times it feels like Canadian director Ashley McKenzie is setting a challenge with this: are you arthouse enough? Have you got the cinematic endurance? Her film is the story of a friendship between a neurodivergent teenager called Star struggling with her mental health, and a hospital volunteer newly immigrated from China. You could imagine it being turned into a quirky-cute odd-couple indie comedy with a superficial take on neurodivergence. Instead, McKenzie pulls us into Star’s reality, how she experiences the world. It’s a disorientating, unrelaxing two-hour experience, but rewarding. It is set in the middle of winter in Nova Scotia, with snow up to the height of car roofs. Star (brilliantly played by Sarah Walker) has been admitted to hospital after drinking poison – not her first suicide attempt. A doctor recognises her from the last time, but Star doesn’t remember him.

Atlee confirms movie with Thalapathy Vijay and Shah Rukh Khan; superstars agree

Ever since Atlee and Shah Rukh Khan announced their collaboration for Jawan and kicked off the shoot in Chennai, the rumours of Thalapathy Vijay being a part of the film has been doing the rounds. Although fans were disappointed when they did not see the Tamil superstar in a cameo, now an announcement by the filmmaker has left them surprised. Atlee recently confirmed that he is planning to do a film with both the superstars and the duo have already agreed. In an interview with TV presenter Gopinath, Atlee revealed that Shah Rukh Khan and Thalapathy Vijay had discussed about this project when they attended his birthday celebrations. Readers would probably recall that on his birthday, the Jawan filmmaker had posted a photo of the two superstars posing together which had fueled speculations about Vijay’s cameo in the action entertainer. During the interaction, Atlee revealed that Vijay and SRK had discussed it among themselves and had called him to inform that they are both ready to do a

Muzzle review – Aaron Eckhart out-acted by German shepherd in cop-mutt thriller

Eckhart can’t match his canine co-star (with titanium teeth) in this shonky and forgettable police thriller No offence to Aaron Eckhart, but “Sad Aaron” doesn’t quite have the same emotional thwack to the soft parts as “Sad Keanu”. Like John Wick, Muzzle begins with a dead doggie, and Eckhart plays LAPD officer Jake Rosser, an army veteran with PTSD; his only meaningful relationship is with his K9 partner, a German shepherd called Ace. There’s an excruciating scene setting up their deep bond, Rosser musing on the misuse of the word “literally” as he drives to work, Ace listening dutifully in the passenger seat next to him. When Ace is killed in a shootout, Rosser finds himself embroiled in a police scandal. Footage emerges from the crime scene of him head-butting a paramedic who insists – quite reasonably, you might think – on treating human casualties first. After a few sessions with the police therapist, Rosser is back on the job and out for revenge. His new partner is Socks, an ag

Elon Musk biopic to be directed by Black Swan film-maker Darren Aronofsky

The Oscar-nominated director will adapt the recent biography by Walter Isaacson after independent studio A24 won a ‘heated’ bidding war for rights A biopic of billionaire tech entrepreneur Elon Musk is now in the works after independent studio A24 won the adaptation rights to Walter Isaacson’s recent biography, with Black Swan’s Darren Aronofsky on board to direct. Variety magazine reports that A24 triumphed in a “heated competition” bidding war to acquire Isaacson’s authorised biography Elon Musk , which was published in September. It was heavily criticised in some quarters, with the Guardian describing it as a “dull, insight-free doorstop of a book”, and it generated a number of controversies itself, with Isaacson forced to correct a suggestion that Musk had ordered his Starlink satellite communications network to be turned off to stop a Ukrainian drone attack on Russian warships. Penelope My Love review – admirably honest portrait of a mother and her autistic child

Film-maker Claire Doyon’s bio-doc charts the rich but deeply challenging experiences of being a parent to daughter Pénélope and the intense bond that changes as they both grow older In 2012, French film-maker Claire Doyon made Pénélope , a 50-minute documentary, about taking her autistic daughter Pénélope to deepest Mongolia to meet a shaman. As a parent of children with autism, I made it a mission to watch as many films as I could about the condition, and this unfortunately appears to have slipped through the net and is not available anywhere, at least in the UK or US. That elusiveness alone might suggest that Doyon’s own feelings about the film, her daughter and her quest to find ways to cope with Pénélope’s condition have changed over the years. What’s more, she has now made another film, Penelope My Love, which incorporates footage from her earlier work, forming what feels more like a revision than a mere revisiting. This is the first time that a film of YRF (Yash Raj Films) Spy Universe has ended with the hint of the future installment. The scene nicely enhances excitement for War 2.” YRF Spy Universe began with Ek Tha Tiger (2012) fo

Mrs Hardcastle was one I’d always wanted

‘I am all for strangeness’: Tilda Swinton on artistic integrity, acting and the afterlife

The Oscar-winning Scottish actor answers questions from Observer readers and famous fans including Pedro Almodóvar, Wes Anderson and Elton John Tilda Swinton has been posing in different costumes for the Observer’s photographer and, as I arrive, has just changed into tartan trousers, saucy two-tone shoes and is standing perfectly still as a hairdresser attends to a blond quiff that makes her look like an incredible exotic bird – or a dandy hooligan, although her face looks too seraphic to mutate into aggro. What you see almost at once is that Swinton is giving 100% to the task at hand while being obligingly considerate to everyone around her. The mix of professionalism with warmth disarms, especially when you might have expected a superstar loftiness. For Swinton is a superstar – ranked by the New York Times as one of the greatest actors of the 21st century. Original, distinctive and questing, she has played everything from a distraught mother in Lynne Ramsay’s We Need to Talk abou

Bigg Boss 17: Aishwarya Sharma breaks down after Salman Khan condemns her behaviour towards Neil Bhatt; accuses Neil Bhatt of ‘shouting at her at home’

Bigg Boss 17 contestants Aishwarya Sharma annd Neil Bhatt had a major fight in the BB house earlier this week and it seems that during the recent Weekend Ka Vaar, Salman Khan addressed the issue. In fact, the superstar host condemned Sharma for disrespecting Neil and schooled her for her behaviour towards her partner. However, followed by these events, Aishwarya confronted Neil and accused him of showcasing a different side to the camera on the show. Salman Khan told Aishwarya Sharma to control her behaviour towards Neil Bhatt and warned her saying, “Kitna patience aap iska try karogi? Ek din ye phatega, aur aap pe phatega. (Don’t try his patience. He will burst and he will burst on you)”.
