Cal review – grieving Helen Mirren superb in compassionate Troubles romance

Mirren won best actress at Cannes in 1984 for her role as Marcella, who forms a relationship with John Lynch’s Cal – a man complicit in her husband’s murder Pat O’Connor’s Northern Irish movie from 1984, adapted by author Bernard MacLaverty from his own novel, holds up very well for its rerelease; better in fact than most of the movies and TV drama made about and during the Troubles. It has an unhurried, thoughtful and very human quality; Helen Mirren won the best actress award at Cannes for her performance here and in fact it is very well acted across the board by a blue-chip cast. Mirren plays Marcella, a woman from a Catholic background, married across the sectarian divide to a reserve police officer murdered at his parents’ farmhouse by an IRA man who had bullied a bewildered local guy into being his getaway driver; this is Cal, played by the gauntly intense John Lynch. Rajkummar Rao starrer Maalik set to hit theatres on June 20, 2025

The much-awaited action entertainer Maalik has finally secured its theatrical release date. Produced by Tips Films and Northern Lights Films, the film is set to hit the big screens on June 20, 2025.

The makers officially announced the release date with a powerful Instagram post, writing, “Poore pradesh aur desh pe RAJ karne aa rahe hain MAALIK!” The announcement has already created buzz among fans, who are eagerly waiting to see what the film has in store.

While details about the film’s plot and cast remain under wraps, Maalik promises to be a high-octane action spectacle. With Tips Films’ track record of delivering hit action dramas, expectations are high for this upcoming release.

Starring Rajkummar Rao in and as Maalik, the film showcases the actor like never before—stepping into the shoes of a ruthless gangster with a striking new intensity. The poster, which received an overwhelming response from fans, teased Rao’s fierce transformation, setting the stage for a gripping action spectacle.

The film marks a significant shift in Rao’s filmography, as he dives into an edgy, larger-than-life character that blends raw power with emotional depth.

Directed by Pulkit, known for his work in thrillers and dramas, Maalik is currently in post-production.

Maalik is produced by Kumar Taurani under the Tips Films banner and Jay Shewakramani's Northern Lights Films. The film will release theatrically on 20th June 2025.
