Drag is a tool of self-expression and of protest in this kaleidoscopic portrait of the city’s vibrant underground art The queer defiance of Fil Ieropoulos’s kaleidoscopic documentary manifests not only through its subject, but also through its form. Centring on a group of drag performers and gender-nonconforming artists in Athens, this shape-shifting film celebrates a vibrant underground scene that thrives in a homophobic system, rife with state-sanctioned discrimination and violence. Introduced through an episodic structure, figures from the community light up the screen with their artistry and activism as they carve out a safe haven of their own. On Friday (February 7), Prime Minister Narendra Modi interacted virtually with prominent figures from the entertainment and business sectors as part of the WAVE Summit. The meeting included Bollywood icons like Amitabh Bachchan, Shah Rukh Khan, and Diljit Dosanjh, as well as global business leaders such as Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella and Reliance Industries Chairman Mukesh Ambani. The discussion focused on India’s potential to become a global hub for creativity and content creation.

The WAVES Summit, short for World Audio Visual Entertainment Summit, aims to bring together professionals from the media, entertainment, and creative industries. During the 117th episode of Mann Ki Baat, PM Modi stated, “This summit is an important step towards making India a hub of global content creation.” The event, scheduled for December 2024, will showcase India’s creative talent on a global stage. WAVES’ Advisory Board The Advisory Board of the WAVES Summit comprises some of the biggest names in entertainment and business. Alongside Amitabh Bachchan, Shah Rukh Khan, and Diljit Dosanjh, the meeting featured Rajinikanth, Ranbir Kapoor, Chiranjeevi, Anil Kapoor, Akshay Kumar, Anupam Kher, and AR Rahman. Business leaders like Anand Mahindra and Satya Nadella also participated, offering insights on how to elevate India’s creative economy.

PM Modi shared a glimpse of the interaction on X (formerly Twitter), writing, “Just concluded an extensive meeting of the Advisory Board of WAVES, the global summit that brings together the world of entertainment, creativity, and culture.” He highlighted the board’s valuable inputs on making India a global entertainment hub.

WAVES Summit: A Platform for Creative Growth Launched on September 8, 2024, the WAVES Summit has already garnered significant attention for its focus on storytelling and technological innovation. The Ministry of Information & Broadcasting has partnered with Dancing Atoms for the Animation Filmmakers Competition, a flagship event under the summit. This collaboration marks a historic step in fostering creativity and innovation in India’s entertainment industry.

The Portable Door review – Harry Potter-ish YA fantasy carried by hardworking cast

Jeffrey Walker’s adaptation of the young-adult fantasy novel retains its edge thanks to its performances, but gets stuck on the whole door thing Adapted from Tom Holt’s 2003 young-adult fantasy novel, this is a passable attempt at kickstarting a new Harry Potter-style franchise set in a fusty-quirky institution, dosed up with extra Gilliamesque grotesquery. Co-produced by the Jim Henson Company, the production design is poky and intense, and the cast – with Christoph Waltz and Sam Neill larking it up – give it their all. But amid all this clutter, it sometimes has trouble moving its story forward.
