Shadow Force review – Kerry Washington overacts in low-rent action slop

Director Joe Carnahan’s limply made thriller about an estranged couple of elite operatives is a lazy grab bag of exhaustingly familiar cliches Maybe the new action movie Shadow Force is just deserts for film fans who complain when seemingly surefire big-screen hits such as Another Simple Favor debut as streaming-only releases. Shadow Force has a premise almost comically adherent to the fixations of so many big-budget streaming movies: elite operatives Kyrah ( Kerry Washington ) and Isaac (Omar Sy) must fight for their lives and their family when they defy the rules of their, yes, shadowy employers by falling in love and having a child. It shares familiar components including charismatic stars, spy action, domestic strife and semi-slapstick violence with projects such as Back in Action (Netflix), Role Play (Prime Video) and Ghosted (Apple TV+), among others. Javed Akhtar to walk down memory lane with ‘Main Koi Aisa Geet Gaoon’, a nostalgic evening of music and stories

On December 29, 2023, Padma Bhushan awardee, legendary screenwriter, lyricist and celebrated poet Javed Akhtar will host ‘Main Koi Aisa Geet Gaoon’, an evening brimming with unheard stories behind famous songs and songs that led to unforgettable stories. He will delve deep into his treasure-trove to share golden trivia about magical collaborations with iconic composers, musicians, singers, directors, and actors.

Singers Meiyang Chang and Jahanvi Shrimankar, along with a live band, will layer this evening of never heard before anecdotes, with renditions of classic songs. The event, presented by Saregama Live, will be held from 7 pm onwards at Mumbai’s Sri Shanmukhananda Chandrasekarendra Saraswathi Auditorium.

Sharing more about the show, Javed Akhtar said, “With the passage of time, memories gain a certain compelling power and ever so often, I find myself reliving musical sittings, conversations and moments of serendipity that led to the songs that are now considered iconic. Usually, songs are a part of a film's story but many a time, they too have a story of their own and it will be a joy to share some of them with the audience. This will be a lively, free-flowing conversation that will celebrate stalwart composers, singers, producers and actors that I have had the pleasure to closely collaborate with.”

Siddharth Anand Kumar, Senior VP, Film, Series & Events, Saregama India, added, “This evening will immerse audiences in nostalgia and take them down the memory lane. Javed Akhtar’s poetic and cinematic roots go all the way back to Jaan Nissar Akhtar, his father who was a celebrated poet and lyricist too. He has witnessed many eras of popular culture and is part of so many of our most enduring musical memories. Via ‘Main Koi Aisa Geet Gaoon’, he will share the stories behind some of them. This is a not to be missed experience for anyone who loves music and would want to savour a live interaction with the legend himself.”

As his breakthrough classic returns to the screen, Hayes looks back One day in 1957, Melvyn Hayes was on the set of a film called Woman in a Dressing Gown when a man sat down next to him. “I was getting paid £5 a day and I’d been on location for three days,” the actor recalls. “All I had to do was walk up to a house and put a newspaper through a letterbox. The Portable Door review – Harry Potter-ish YA fantasy carried by hardworking cast

Jeffrey Walker’s adaptation of the young-adult fantasy novel retains its edge thanks to its performances, but gets stuck on the whole door thing Adapted from Tom Holt’s 2003 young-adult fantasy novel, this is a passable attempt at kickstarting a new Harry Potter-style franchise set in a fusty-quirky institution, dosed up with extra Gilliamesque grotesquery. Co-produced by the Jim Henson Company, the production design is poky and intense, and the cast – with Christoph Waltz and Sam Neill larking it up – give it their all. But amid all this clutter, it sometimes has trouble moving its story forward.
