The Golden Spurtle review – a cosy celebration of porridge and its champions

This Australian documentary about the world porridge championships, held each year in a Scottish village, is as wholesome and nourishing as its oat-stirring subjects The word “porridge” to me evokes something modest and satisfying: mouthfuls of reliable pleasantness in a terribly volatile world. How lovely that The Golden Spurtle – Constantine Costi’s charming documentary about the world’s annual porridge-making championship in the Scottish village of Carrbridge – has assumed some of the qualities of the dish. It isn’t flashy (and certainly doesn’t scream “must-watch”) but, like a good ol’ fashioned bowl of well-cooked oats, it’s got it where it counts. This film is a pleasure to watch – with endearing salt-of-the-earth subjects, a lovely ebb and flow, and a tone that feels just right: neither overly serious nor tongue in cheek. Akshay Kumar slams Richa Chadha for allegedly insulting the Indian Army through ‘Galwan’ tweet

Akshay Kumar has slammed Richa Chadha for her controversial ‘Galwan tweet.’ The actor shared the image of her now deleted tweet and wrote, “Hurts to see this. Nothing ever should make us ungrateful towards our armed forces. Woh hain toh aaj hum hain.”

The tweet, as expected, has gone viral in no time with a lot of Twitter users praising Akshay for taking a stand against a member of his own fraternity.

The whole story started when the Northern Army Commander Lt. General Upendra Dwivedi announced that the Indian Army, if given orders by the government of India, is ready to reclaim Pakistan occupied Kashmir (PoK).

Following this, Richa quoted the news on Twitter and wrote, “Galwan says hi.” This was an indirect dig at the disputed Galwan territory between India and China. This was enough to create a controversy as a large number of netizens started slamming the actress for allegedly targeting the Indian army.

Earlier in the day, Richa, after realizing the controversial impact of her tweet, deleted the post and later apologized in case her words hurt the sentiments of the people of India.

The Portable Door review – Harry Potter-ish YA fantasy carried by hardworking cast

Jeffrey Walker’s adaptation of the young-adult fantasy novel retains its edge thanks to its performances, but gets stuck on the whole door thing Adapted from Tom Holt’s 2003 young-adult fantasy novel, this is a passable attempt at kickstarting a new Harry Potter-style franchise set in a fusty-quirky institution, dosed up with extra Gilliamesque grotesquery. Co-produced by the Jim Henson Company, the production design is poky and intense, and the cast – with Christoph Waltz and Sam Neill larking it up – give it their all. But amid all this clutter, it sometimes has trouble moving its story forward.
