Animol review – gritty young offenders drama challenges conventional machismo

Institutional menace and an idealistic take on redemption sit side-by-side in Top Boy actor Ashley Walters’ empathic and occasionally over-earnest film The lawless brutality of a young offender institution is the setting for this British movie written by Marching Powder ’s Nick Love and directed by Ashley Walters. It’s a place where terrified newbies realise they can survive only by abandoning their innocence and decency, and submitting to the gang authority of a psycho top G, naturally involving a horrible loyalty test. This is a place where drugs arrive by drone, where facially tattooed men meet each other’s gaze with a cool opaque challenge in the canteen, and where the cues and balls on the recreation area’s pool table have only one purpose: to give someone a three-month stay in the hospital wing while underpaid guards in lanyards and ill-fitting v-neck jumpers look the other way. Ahead of his prison drama Wasteman, David Jonsson discusses the pressures of being a leading Black British actor David Jonsson is the kind of actor who disappears so completely into his roles that it’s easy to forget you’re watching the same person each time. He’s now starring as heroin addict Taylor in the ultraviolent British prison drama Wasteman and, for the first time, the 32-year-old actor claims he is playing something close to himself. “This is the most personal role I’ve done,” he says. “It’s so messed up because it’s a dark story about rehabilitation and addiction, but I know these men really well. Especially when you’re growing up somewhere like where I did.” We meet on a Friday afternoon at a photo studio in ...

Everybody Digs Bill Evans review – absorbing delve into the tumultuous world of the great jazz man

Grant Gee’s film thoroughly inhabits the creative and personal torment experienced by the American pianist – with a terrific supporting Bill Pullman turn This elusive, ruminative and very absorbing movie presents its successive scenes like a sequence of unresolved chords carrying the listener on a journey without a destination – and is, incidentally, one of those rare films featuring a wonderful supporting turn that does not undermine or upstage the rest. It’s a film about music. Particularly, about what remains when a musician cannot play and is left to consider the terrible sacrifices made, without conscious consent, to this all-consuming vocation that creates family pain and jealousy almost as a toxic byproduct. It’s a drama to put you in mind of Glenn Gould and Hilary du Pré, sister of Jacqueline. Screenwriter Mark O’Halloran has adapted the 2013 novel Intermission by Owen Martell about renowned jazz pianist Bill Evans. It focuses on a period of emotional devastation for Evans, ...

Aditya Pancholi seeks quashing of Rape FIR; Next hearing on Feb 24

Veteran Bollywood actor Aditya Pancholi returned to the spotlight on Thursday as the Bombay High Court took up his petition to quash a 2019 rape FIR lodged against him at the Versova Police Station in Mumbai. The case involves allegations made by a female Bollywood actress. Pancholi’s legal team, led by advocate Prashant Patil, urged the court to dismiss the FIR on grounds that it was filed many years after the alleged incident, describing the complaint as “malicious” and lacking in timely evidence. The plea cited legal precedent, notably the Supreme Court’s Bhajanlal judgment,  which allows quashing of criminal proceedings under specific circumstances. During Thursday’s hearing, the defence also presented a recording of a meeting prior to the FIR being filed, which they claim demonstrates “wrongful intention” behind the complaint. The court noted the submission but did not rule on its admissibility, opting instead to focus on procedural matters at this stage. A key point raised ...
