Black Lotus review – kickboxer thriller looks like ad for Amsterdam tourist board

Rico Verhoeven’s Dutch-produced acting debut is a slapdash meeting of illogical storylines amid meaningless plot points This hapless Dutch-produced thriller almost redeems itself with a decent final sequence staged in the neon-doused John Wick style, but it is too little, too late. Gigantic 6ft 5in kickboxer Rico Verhoeven blows his shot at action stardom with a showing of anti-charisma best described as if Lenny from Of Mice and Men had become a special forces operative. And the Amsterdam tourist board – for whom this at least lustrously shot film serves as a long commercial – must hold serious dirt on Frank Grillo for him to have signed up. Even by his snap-your-hand-off-for-a-paycheck standards, he has a binfire on his hands. Verhoeven plays Matteo, former crack point man for a tactical unit of vague remit, who is licking his wounds after a hostage rescue at the German national opera goes south and his boss is killed. Recuperating at a Romanian sawmill, as you do, he returns to Am

Suriya to feature as the lead in the Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra film Karna?

Recreating a portion of Mahabharata with his next, Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra is expected to be planning to retell the folklore of an epic saga with Karna. Going by recent reports it seems that the filmmaker is keen on Suriya playing the lead role. We hear that the actor too is keen on playing the role and is in advanced talks with the Rang De Basanti filmmaker for the same. As per a Pinkvilla report, Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra was keen on roping an experienced actor to essay this complex character. A source was quoted in these reports saying, “Karna is Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra’s dream project and he has been working on the subject for a while now. The filmmaker as also his producer partners believe that the film has potential to be a game changer in India as no one has attempted a film on such a complex protagonist till date. The character traits warranted a great actor who can slip from one zone to the other, and who better than Suriya to do the same.” Needless to say, the film will be a

The Eccentrics review – daft 70s comedy that’s the Georgian answer to Terry Gilliam

Eldar Shengelaia’s goofy flying-machine comedy from the Soviet era has an ending that can’t fail to make you laugh Georgian director Eldar Shengelaia’s film Blue Mountains from 1983 has already been showcased on the Klassiki streaming service: a clever satire of Soviet bureaucracy. Now one of his earlier films, from 1973, has been revived; aptly entitled The Eccentrics, it is a very different proposition. You’d be hard put to divine a political or satirical meaning here exactly, although you can find one if you really want. This is more a daft, knockabout comedy, a festival of silliness which looks like something the Georgian cousin of Richard Lester or Terry Gilliam might have made. It is a wacky, goofy fantasy that comes into its own in the final 15 minutes and lets you forgive it for all the broad indulgence that has gone before. Demno Jgenti plays Ertaozi, a hapless young man from the country, rendered penniless by paying off his late father’s debts. He goes to the big city to s

Flamin’ Hot review – under-seasoned Cheetos biopic sticks to the formula

The man who invented Flamin’ Hot Cheetos gets his time in the sun but Eva Longoria’s by-the-numbers drama leaves questions A film telling the story of a Mexican American janitor who went on to create a $1bn snack brand fits into Hollywood’s current cultural and creative moment rather perfectly. It’s been a time both of exploring the dramatic origins of everyday products and services (from Nike’s Air Jordans to BlackBerry to Tetris to Uber) and of finding more ways to tell diverse stories outside of a prohibitively limited lens, a lens that’s been particularly limited for Latino characters. Despite Latino audiences over-indexing at cinemas in the US (in 2021, they had the highest per-capita attendance, averaging 1.7 visits a year compared with 1.3 for white audiences), there remains a disappointing dearth of big-screen representation (a report last year showed that just 5.2% of leads in film were Latino or Hispanic). Ahead of this summer’s landmark DC adventure Blue Beetle, centerin
