Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F review – fish-out-of-water Eddie Murphy chases past glories

Murphy’s maverick cop – and his theme music – are back to fight corruption, but four decades on there’s little energy to enliven their formulaic reunion Eddie Murphy isn’t finished yet – as he proved with his barnstormer of a performance as Blaxploitation pioneer Rudy Ray Moore in Dolemite Is My Name . But there’s something a bit tired and formulaic about this further go-around for his iconic Detroit cop Axel Foley from the Beverly Hills Cop action-comedy franchise which 40 years ago made Murphy an explosive Hollywood star – and whose catchy Axel F theme became an 80s anthem, duly revived here. He’s back for the fourth film, yet again leaving his Detroit turf to be a scruffy fish-out-of-water in the hilariously chi-chi world of Beverly Hills, yet again wryly noticing from the wheel of his car, on the way in, a montage of all the crazy California stuff, including a car registration plate reading: PRE-NUP. Axel’s grownup lawyer daughter Jane (Taylour Paige) is in Beverly Hills, menace

Karan Johar reveals that Alia Bhatt's saree-clad character in Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani was derived from real-life journalist Poonam Saxena

Karan Johar returned as a director after seven years with Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani, starring Ranveer Singh, Alia Bhatt, Dharmendra, Jaya Bachchan and Shabana Azmi. The romantic drama became a talking point for many reasons, one of which was Rani’s (Alia Bhatt) glamorous sarees. Almost everyone was floored by Rani’s fashion sense but many asked whether any journalist wears such fancy sarees to work. Karan Johar was asked about it by Mayank Shekhar of Mid-Day recently. Karan justified it by pointing to three women, present in the interviewing area, who were journalists and who were wearing sarees. He then also revealed that Rani’s character in Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani was inspired by a journalist named Poonam Saxena. Not just Rani in his latest release, but Rani Mukerji’s character in Karan Johar’s short in Bombay Talkies (2013), was also a female journalist, who used to be saree-clad. Karan Johar said, “This Rani (Alia Bhatt in Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani) and that R

After 10 years, I'm stepping down as the Observer's film critic. Here are my top films from the decade | Mark Kermode

As I leave the post, I look back on how cinema has changed since 2013 and, below, pick a favourite movie from each year of my tenure – as well as a turkey This week, I filed my final column as chief film critic for the Observer . I’m stepping down after exactly 10 years in the role, making way for the brilliant Wendy Ide to take over the reins and put her own inimitable stamp on the paper. A longstanding colleague and friend, Wendy is an exceptional critic and I look forward to reading her insightful and elegant reviews in these pages for years to come. In the meantime, looking back at my own experiences over the past decade, I’m struck by how much the moviegoing landscape has changed. When I took over from the great Philip French in September 2013, Kathryn Bigelow was still the only woman to have won the Oscar for best director, having made history when she triumphed with her tense war drama The Hurt Locker in 2010. The Academy Awards have, of course, always been inherently ridicu

This forthcoming biographical film will be produced by T-Series. Saroj Khan, who had dedicated nearly four decades to the art of dance and choreography, passed away due to a heart attack. While specific narrative details of the biopic remain in the early stages of development, there have been reports suggesting that Madhuri Dixit is under consideration to portray the iconic Saroj Khan. Regarding the biopic, an insider told Hindustan Times, “Writing is still at a very nascent stage and hence nothing concrete has come out. However, the makers are trying to have a series of actors to play Saroj ji in different phases of her life. For example, one girl will play Saroj ji in her younger days, while the other one will play her older version. And Madhuri is being considered for one of these roles.” The source also highlighted the e

Karan Johar emerged as a director to reckon with, with the monstrous blockbuster Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (1998). He then followed it up with another huge grosser, the big-budget multi-starrer family entertainer, Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham (2001). 2 years later, he came up with Kal Ho Naa Ho (2003), his first film as a producer, and it was also a very big hit. Starring Shah Rukh Khan, Saif Ali Khan and Preity Zinta, the romantic drama marked the directorial debut of Nikkhil Advani, a successful director-producer today. Karan had written its script. After Kal Ho Naa Ho, however, Nikkhil Advani left Dharma Productions. In a recent interview, he revealed that due to his public fall out with Karan Johar, he didn’t get work for three years.
