Eddington review - Ari Aster’s tedious Covid western masks drama and mutes his stars

Cannes film festival Joaquin Phoenix, Pedro Pascal, Emma Stone and Austin Butler have little to work with in this disappointing dud from the Hereditary and Midsommar director Ari Aster now worryingly creates a losing streak with this bafflingly dull movie, a laborious and weirdly self-important satire which makes a heavy, flavourless meal of some uninteresting and unoriginal thoughts – on the Covid lockdown, online conspiracy theories, social polarisation, Black Lives Matter, liberal-white privilege and guns. The movie looks good, courtesy of Darius Khondji’s cinematography, but has nothing new or dramatically vital to say, and moreover manages the extraordinary achievement of making Emma Stone, Pedro Pascal and Joaquin Phoenix look like boring actors. This is by virtue of its moderate script and by the unvarying stolid pace over its hefty running time which might have suited a 12-episode streamer. Vicky Kaushal hits the gym despite fractured arm; watch

Bollywood actor Vicky Kaushal, known for his dedication to fitness, continues to inspire fans even in the face of adversity. Despite sustaining an injury on the sets of his upcoming film Chhava, the actor remains committed to his workout regimen.

In a recent Instagram story, Vicky Kaushal shared a glimpse of his workout. Despite sporting an arm cast, the actor can be seen engaging in seated crunches at the gym. Accompanying the video, Vicky Kaushal shared an inspiring caption, “When we can't run, we walk...we don't stop.” In the following Instagram Story, Vicky can be seen standing inside a -110 degC chamber. Alongside the clip, he wrote, “Recovery mode on.”

Reportedly, Vicky sustained the arm injury while filming a challenging stunt sequence for Chhava. Vicky portrays the role of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj alongside Rashmika Mandanna as Yesubai Bhonsale in the film. Chhava has temporarily halted shooting to accommodate Vicky's recovery process.

The actor is also set to star in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s highly anticipated project, Love and War, alongside Alia Bhatt and Ranbir Kapoor.

The Portable Door review – Harry Potter-ish YA fantasy carried by hardworking cast

Jeffrey Walker’s adaptation of the young-adult fantasy novel retains its edge thanks to its performances, but gets stuck on the whole door thing Adapted from Tom Holt’s 2003 young-adult fantasy novel, this is a passable attempt at kickstarting a new Harry Potter-style franchise set in a fusty-quirky institution, dosed up with extra Gilliamesque grotesquery. Co-produced by the Jim Henson Company, the production design is poky and intense, and the cast – with Christoph Waltz and Sam Neill larking it up – give it their all. But amid all this clutter, it sometimes has trouble moving its story forward.
