Raashii Khanna speaks out on Bollywood’s South remake trend; says, “Dubbed films are anyway available to watch online”

Actress Raashii Khanna acknowledges the prevalent trend of Bollywood drawing inspiration from successful South Indian films to boost box office performance. However, she believes it’s time for the industry to shift gears. With audiences now craving original storytelling and dubbed South films easily available online, Raashii stresses the need for fresh content. In today’s pan-India cinema landscape, she agrees that Bollywood’s attempt to replicate South hits is a reality, but one that needs rethinking. Raashii told Hindustan Times, “⁠I can’t disagree that we do see remakes from the south quite often but I think the industry is also realising more and more that the audience needs newer content and that dubbed films are anyway available to watch online.” She added, “With the rise of OTT platforms, language is no longer a barrier. Ted Sarandos, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Netflix, will conduct a question and answer session with Sanjay Leela Bhansali today, Saturday February 18. Bhansali will be quizzed on the fast-evolving relationship between cinema and the OTT platform. Although it is a web-series, Heeramandi, which he is making for Netflix, is Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s most ambitious work to date. “In terms of vision and labour, Heeramandi is the toughest project of my career so far. It is like making eight different films. Every episode is like a full-length feature film. There are no compromises in the filmmaking because of the size of the screen,” says Bhansali. The Portable Door review – Harry Potter-ish YA fantasy carried by hardworking cast

Jeffrey Walker’s adaptation of the young-adult fantasy novel retains its edge thanks to its performances, but gets stuck on the whole door thing Adapted from Tom Holt’s 2003 young-adult fantasy novel, this is a passable attempt at kickstarting a new Harry Potter-style franchise set in a fusty-quirky institution, dosed up with extra Gilliamesque grotesquery. Co-produced by the Jim Henson Company, the production design is poky and intense, and the cast – with Christoph Waltz and Sam Neill larking it up – give it their all. But amid all this clutter, it sometimes has trouble moving its story forward. The Portable Door has a nice conceit: the venerable London corporation of JW Wells & Co is responsible for engineering all the daily incidents of coincidence and serendipity that happen in urban life.
