Cal review – grieving Helen Mirren superb in compassionate Troubles romance

Mirren won best actress at Cannes in 1984 for her role as Marcella, who forms a relationship with John Lynch’s Cal – a man complicit in her husband’s murder Pat O’Connor’s Northern Irish movie from 1984, adapted by author Bernard MacLaverty from his own novel, holds up very well for its rerelease; better in fact than most of the movies and TV drama made about and during the Troubles. It has an unhurried, thoughtful and very human quality; Helen Mirren won the best actress award at Cannes for her performance here and in fact it is very well acted across the board by a blue-chip cast. Mirren plays Marcella, a woman from a Catholic background, married across the sectarian divide to a reserve police officer murdered at his parents’ farmhouse by an IRA man who had bullied a bewildered local guy into being his getaway driver; this is Cal, played by the gauntly intense John Lynch. Gal Gadot is Tiffany and Co’s High Jewelry Ambassador

Wonder Woman tried on jewelry from the Blue Book 2022 collection called Botanica. Gal Gadot, best known since Wonder Woman, is the face of Tiffany & Co.'s new high jewelry collection. The 2022 Blue Book collection Botanica was inspired by nature. The brand's skilled artisans have reimagined classic Tiffany motifs, celebrating the beauty of multifaceted flora with their help. The result is masterpieces with unique diamonds and colored gemstones. In addition, decorations are filled with plants - from orchids and dandelions to wisteria and thistles. The photographs show the actress wearing the collection's key pieces, including a dandelion-inspired transformable diamond necklace that transforms into five unique pieces, an orchid-inspired transformable brooch, and a needle thistle-inspired diamond and sapphire necklace. I am incredibly proud to be part of the Blue Book's new high jewelry campaign and very fortunate to represent the most important jewelry collection in such an exciting time for the brand. "Gal Gadot is more than a House Ambassador. It embodies the effortless glamour, sheer sophistication, and innovative feel of Blue Book," said Alexander Arno, Executive Vice President of Product and Communications at Tiffany & Co. The campaign with Gal Gadot is the first advertising initiative of the House with the participation of the actress. In addition to the new Blue Book jewelry, Gal Gadot is featured in several of Jean Schlumberger's masterpieces, also part of Botanica, including his iconic Bird on a Rock brooch and Fleurage bracelet. A sophisticated creation was first brought to life by Tiffany & Co.; the Fleurage bracelet was created from a design Jean Schlumberger once considered for the iconic Tiffany Diamond. Connoisseurs will see references to Tiffany's creations from the past in the collection. For example, dandelion fluffs, one of the elements of Louis Comfort Tiffany's hair ornaments of the early 20th century, received a new interpretation in several diamond masterpieces.
