Mark Kermode on… Kathryn Bigelow, a stylish ruffler of feathers

From vampire noir to Bin Laden, Point Break to Detroit, the first woman to win an Oscar for best director has never pulled her punches Watching new Jeff Nichols release The Bikeriders , starring Austin Butler and Tom Hardy as 60s Chicago greasers, I was reminded of two other movies: László Benedek’s 1953 Marlon Brando vehicle The Wild One , explicitly cited as an inspiration, and The Loveless , the 1981 feature debut of Kathryn Bigelow , the American film-maker (b.1951) who would go on to become the first woman to win a best director Oscar with her 2008 war drama The Hurt Locker . A symphony of leather-clad posing (with just a touch of Kenneth Anger ), The Loveless was a staple of the late-night circuit in the 80s, often on a double bill with David Lynch’s Eraserhead . Sharing directing credits with Monty Montgomery, Bigelow playfully deconstructed masculinity and machismo in a manner that was one part wry to two parts relish. I remember seeing The Loveless at the Phoenix in East

The Last Kingdom: Seven Kings Must Die review – gripping spin-off from Netflix show

There’s a ton of plot packed into this standalone movie derived from the TV series, but the deluge of detail gets steadily more absorbing Here is a standalone feature film and final capstone in Netflix’s British-made TV series The Last Kingdom, an epic in every sense of the word that’s based on novels by Bernard Cornwell and unfolds in the 10th century, just before the Norman invasion. Even if you’ve never seen a single episode from any of the show’s previous five seasons of dramatised yet highly researched British history, you’ll probably quite like to go back and start watching the whole saga from the beginning because it gets more gripping the more you surrender to it. This is largely down to the thoughtful way it tries to present a society composed of pagan Danes and Christian Saxons – and folks who are a bit of both – trying with some difficulty to all get along. The main dude is one such mixed-heritage chap named Uhtred (Alexander Dreymon), who apparently was born a Saxon but r

Three Colours: Red review – Kieślowski’s absorbing exploration of the lives of others

In what was to be his last film, the final chapter of the director’s trilogy considers our incurious habits by brooding on coincidence and fate Krzysztof Kieślowski completed his Three Colours trilogy with what was to be his final film. With music by Zbigniew Preisner, it is an almost supernatural contrivance: brooding on coincidence, fate and the insoluble mystery of other people’s lives, with some cosmic parallels and existential echoes that recall his earlier film The Double Life of Véronique . And all in a tone somehow both playful and laden with gnomic seriousness. At its centre is Valentine, played by Irène Jacob, a model who has a job posing for a chewing gum billboard campaign; her image is to dominate the city streets and she briefly achieves a kind of anonymous celebrity – a part of the story which makes Three Colours: Red a New Wave sort of film. During the shoot, the photographer had sensed that she should pose with a desperately sad expression in dramatic profile, with w

In a statement given by Prashant Patil, advocate of Raj Kundra, he has accused the prosecution of postponing the trail. The statement reads, “My client Mr/. Raj Kundra is a Victim of false prosecution. Years have passed by in anticipation of the trial to begin, but, it’s looks like, in spite of consistent efforts to expedite the trial court process, the prosecution is more interested in delaying the trial.” Further the statement also accuses a certain section of media to jump the gun without i

Celina Jaitly to take legal action against Twitter troll; says, “3000 complaints were filed with Twitter”

A notorious Twitter account-holder known to post highly improper comments on Bollywood celebrities, crossed the line of decency once again when he wrote that Celina Jaitly, now happily married and mother of 3 in Austria, had “slept with” both father Feroz Khan and son Fardeen while shooting her debut film Janasheen. While Celina, not one to take such toxic slander lying down, proceeds with the strictest legal action against this repeat offender, she spoke to this writer about the vicious attack on her character. Says Celina, “This guy, whoever he is, went really below the belt with me. On Tuesday 1.4 Million twitterati witnessed the debilitating attacks and stood by me, approximately 3000 complaints were filed with Twitter, it seems, so let’s see.” Speaking of how celebrities are attacked on social media, Celina says, “There is a unique time when things hit you below the belt not once but many times. Being a victim of continued targeted hate by one individual makes you think of yours

Aashiqui 3: Deepika Padukone or Katrina Kaif, to play the female lead opposite Kartik Aaryan?

Now that the future of Aashiqui 3 is secured and it’s been clearly stated that the film starts shooting from December, the big question hovering over the project is, who will play the female lead? Several top-notch names are under serious consideration. But the chosen heroine may finally be either Deepika Padukone or Katrina Kaif. A source close to the developments says, “It won’t be any of the heroines Kartik has already worked with. On the other hand Aashiqui 3’s director Anurag Basu has worked with Katrina before in Barfi, and is keen to work with her again. Amitabh Bachchan won’t be getting back to work anytime soon as he is still recovering from rib injury

There is still time before Amitabh Bachchan returns to shooting. Last week, he did step out for the first time since his rib injury a month ago, to shoot for an ad. Against doctors’ advice, one may add, as this was a long-standing commitment that Mr Bachchan felt he needed to fulfil. As far as resuming regular shootings is concerned, this may not happen immediately. “Bachchan Saab wants to get back to normal shooting asap. But the healing process is slow. One cannot take risks at his age,” a family friend revealed. The mega-star had signed Ribhu Dasgupta’s Section 84 just before the injury. But the dates for Mr Bachchan’s shooting are yet to be locked in. Section 84 also stars Nimrat Kaur who recently joined the cast. Nimrat expressed her joy at being cast with Mr Bachchan. She said, “To be immortalised on screen between action and cut with Mr. Amitabh Bachchan is what this city has given to a small-town girl with a very big dream. Gratitude to Ribhu Dasgupta for this supernal oppor
